Starting issues 1984 Suncrest w/454

Just as the title of my post says having starting issues with my RV. I will state one thing I'm not very mechanically inclined at all and with that said.....

So at times the Rv will start with no issues at all then I will leave it running for 15-20 minutes turn it off and will have basically nothing. Btw there was a new starter and battery installed just recently. So my buddy that installed the starter came over to take a look and this is what he came up with.
I returned the recently bought starter that was a rebuilt and upgraded to a "new" one. He installed the starter then added a relay off the battery. So my main question is what is the purpose of the relay? His fix seems to have worked so far just trying to understand why I would ask him but he is out of town for a few days.

Thanks you for any information that you might be able to share with me.

I have had rebuilt starters fail within weeks of installation, so that does not surprise me. The relay is probably a battery disconnect for when the vehicle is parked, to prevent parasitic drain of the battery. Apparently he is taking good care of your rv.

Ok well we thought we had it fixed but no still having the same issues! This is getting very frustrating becuase I'm actually trying to sell this one and buy the 1988 Sunflyer that I started a thread on. Little hard to sell something that I cant get started. So please if anyone has any ideas please speak up.

Thanks

I had the same problem with an old 454 years ago and could not figure it out. It would not start hot. On old gentleman told me to put a heat shield on the starter to keep it from getting too hot. Sure enough it worked and I never had that problem again. I think they are now standard off the shelf items.

You are right, my 95, has a shield between the exhaust manifold and the starter......

OP this could be your problem, unless of course its not starting when its cold
