Steve's superior is a mirror image of what we recently purchased. Right down to much of the repair work (although minimal to date). Plans are for paint job in next several weeks. Does anyone know the appropriate prep needed for the Zinc coated steel? Want to make sure painter is aware and does the right thing.

For my Superior I went to TSC and got primer that would cover Zinc coated steel. alot of farm stuff is made out of that steel.

I just bought a '73 superior 2200 today, and I'm in Las Cruces, NM. Looking at converting to 4x4 for use at the lake. Do you happen to know the rear gear ratio? I think its a M400 chassis with a 727 and 440. Thanks, James

James, Congrats on the purchase. My 73 2200 is on an RM350 chassis ( by serial number) and according to the 73 Dodge Motorhome chassis manual the rear axle is a Spicer 70 ( 7500# capacity) with a 4.56-1 ratio. Now with that said, There were all kinds of variations coming out of the factory...they were changing things on the fly. I am in Albuquerque and store the Superior out in Moriarty.

Thanks for the info. That ratio should be pretty easy to find. I got to play with the motorhome a bit on Sunday. Looked again at the data plate, it says R40 for the chassis, which I think is very similar to the M400. The motor runs great except for a spun rod bearing, and the tranny works fine despite someone having filled it with motor oil. (groan) I've got the 17.5" wheels, those will have to go! Does yours have the 17.5 or 16" wheels? I'm looking for big, squishy tires to go under, hoping I can fit 16's around the brakes.

I have 17" split rims on my 2500 Superior and going to put 19.5" rims on .

I have 17.5 rims with 6 new Yokohama's so new tires and rims are not in the plan. I have subscribed to a yahoo forum for Travco motorhomes. They are on the Dodge chassis also...lots of good information there. I asked the guys at Discount tire about new rims, they said fitting up new steel rims in a more popular size would be no problem.

They say the split rims are dangerous so I need to get 19.5" 5 lug rims

Yes R4 is a M400 chassis. In the 75 Service manaul Supplement, Dodge went to M400 in 75 and made the M400 designation applicable to 73 and later chassis'.

Because of the M400 and later double caliper, you will not be able to fit 16" rims in place of the 17.5" rims.

Not sure if 19.5" tubeless can be swapped in place of the 17" split ring. Do you have clearance for the larger diameter tire?

You can purchase the Dodge Class A service manual with parts book for $20 at Classic Winnebagos & Vintage RVs!. You have to join but thats free.

The person mounting the tire has to know what he is doing. They use a safety cage to air them up.

Is it just the front calipers that would hit? Since I'm going to convert it to a 4x4, the entire axle and brakes will be new. Looking at the late model Superduty front end, with a 5500 lb rating and 84" wide. Then I could use the 16" tires in the rear and matching diameter tires with the ford rims up front. Thanks for the info!
