Tile Shower

Has anyone tried to tile a shower? I am thinking of installing tile to match the backsplash in the kitchen and shower to match.

Thanks
Adam

Seen it in some newer high end DP's have yet to do it.

Having installed my share of tile I would think you would need a very flexible grout to make it work. Have been considering it in my own as one of the upgrades this next off season. Good opportunity to rid myself of the gold tone shower door too.

The floor in Maggie is tile and after 125K miles the grout has several missing sections. So the floor will be redone as well. I have been considering the grouts available in caulk tubes which is actually silconized grout for back splash to counter use. Flexible so it wont crack out after miles of bumpy highway.

The issue isn't just movement and using flexible grout. My tire guy is an old race car bud and one heckuvan artist. Right now he's doing a project that involves matching a marble pattern on 1/4" lightweight plastic material. It is amazing to watch. He uses airbrush techniques and it's hard to distinguish the difference between the original marble and the plastic.

It's about weight. The project is for a jet interior. But he also does the same thing for custom motorhomes. Ceramic tile is heavy, so is the adhesive and grout.

I enjoy working with tile. If you want to go creative on tile patterns do your search using the term "schemes" instead of patterns etc. The tile schemen in my house was found using that and it is a great no pattern pattern. You have to see about 8' X 8' to see the repeat. It drives OCD and CDO types crazy. I like that.

I found a light tile that I am going to try. Its only 1/8" thick and very light weight. Here is the product from Floor and Decor

https://www.flooranddecor.com/mosaic...=Brown&start=4

In order to further cut down on weight I am using a product called Musselbound as a way to adhere the tiles. I used a similar product on the back splash and fireplace and have had success.

https://www.lowes.com/pd/MusselBound...brane/50141955

All told all of the product including a whole bucket of grout it came in under 65 lbs. I know we wont use 100% of the product so it should come in under that weight.

Hopefully weather holds out and I can do this project next weekend. I'll be sure to post before and after pics.

Thanks
Adam

If not a ceramic material, one of my concerns would be regarding expansion/contraction with big temperature swings.

I forgot to mention I used much less in material than I thought I would and it ended up weighing only 37 lbs total.

Thanks

There's a Facebook group that is all about remodeling RV interiors. I made the mistake of joining and then sharing the site with the best thing about me. She's addicted to it, drives me crazy with "neat projects". If you're on Facebook look for the group if you haven't already.

I agree about weight, but there are plenty of tiles that are not too bad. On a level/flat surface you can use lightweight adhesive as opposed to typical mortar. Cheap tile is often very imprecise as well. Uneven and not square. That requires more floating (read mortar) than high quality tile does.

This tile is only 1.6 lbs/sq ft. So that is 115 lbs for a 7' tall 2 wall 4x4 shower. When you consider other materials that's not a lot more.

Not a lot of options or availability in fiberglass (polyresin) tile.

I'd like to know how this holds up long term. The PO of my rv tiles the shower floor, which is great in theory. But it's badly done, unlevel, and the grout is all but gone and the tiles are cracking.
