I did just that on our '88 Okanagon 17' Type B MH. It had a 460 with the trailer towing package so cruising at 60-70 put the RPMs' up pretty high. Problem was, it cruised really nice after spending some $3,000, but I still couldn't get much over 9 mpg.

Transmission upgrade.

The only Ford overdrive transmission without a computer is the AOD. It is a hydraulically operated transmission with overdrive. If you added a computer to operate the transmission, then you could go with the 4R70W or 4R100 (E4OD). The latter is designed for more abuse..
