I have a 1984 Winnebago Chieftain, I have no title. Owner lost it. Tag on drivers door is faded badly. I found the chassis VIN and am trying to see how to use it to search for a lost title. VIN is 1GBJP37W603326194
Any advice is appreciated.

Can't the previous owner request a copy from the DMV?

You have an error in your VIN code. It is either:
1GBJP37W6D3326194 (1983 P30 Chassis) or
1GBJP37W4E3326194 (1984 P30 Chassis)

Was not uncommon for Winnebago to build currrent year rig (1984) on a chassis that was ordered the previous year (1983). I suspect yours is an 83 chassis.
The 0 you listed (...W603...) was more than likely a D (...W6D3...).
There are VIN records listed against both numbers.

There are several places you can look for VIN records
GovDMVRecords.com - Comprehensive Online Records Searches – GovDMVRecords.com

Car VIN Check

Some more expensive than others. Since you already own the rig it is worth the few bucks for a search.

Thanks

My tow program shows VIN 1GBJP37W6D3326194 as being a 1983 Chevrolet Motorized Home.

RagingBull,
There are Coach numbers and chassis numbers. They could have used either one for original registration. Hopefully they used the chassis one and the records will reflect what state where the unit was originally (or last) titled. Your best option is if the rig was titled to the person you bought it from, then they should get a replacement copy of the title. Though based on your project post, that may not be a luxury available to you.
Good luck,
Dave

Problem that original owner is deceased. Title passed through many hands and those who I could reach don't have the title. Hopefully its registered via chassis VIN. correct VIN is 1GBJP37W6D3326194.
Thanks for the input.

Have you contacted your local DMV to see if they have a procedure for this situation?

Yes but the only info they can give me is what state its titled in and previous states etc. I've already obtained that info. Only LEO's Courts etc can get me the Last registered owner. Sort of hitting a brick wall here.

This seems to come up a LOT with older rigs of all kinds...the original poster is lucky he's at least got a VIN #- it's surprising how many don't, especially TT's
Here's a link to a website that's done much work on the subject of "paperless" vehicles. They've put up the regs for most states.
Register a barn find - scoot.net
It's a scooter site- they call such vehicles "barn finds".
The regs they've tracked down and posted should apply to any "vehicle".

Good luck!

Francesca

Well looks like getting a title is going to be a bit more difficult then I had anticipated. I'll keep chugging along. If needed I'll just file a mechanics lien. I've done it before.
