KatMat, I just had the same problem with a 4K Onan. Save yourself some time and contact "Flight Systems" -- they manufacture regulators and control boards for gens. Mine was the regulator. It wud crank and die in a few sec to maybe a minute. If you held the started button down, it would continue to run.

Katmat;

Do you have over 1/4 tank of gas in the rig? Do you have sufficient oil in the generator? Both will prevent starting.

Here's a quick way to check for a fuel filter problem or an issue with the line back to the tank; pull the flexible fuel line off at the gas filter, if you have one (or cut it at a comfortable spot so you can put a new gas filter in). Stick the gas hose into a one gallon can of gas and see if she'll catch.

If she does, pour a can of Sea Foam in the gallon of gas and run it all through on general carb-cleaning principles.

And yes, voltage regulator and control board are both possibilities.

We've purchased Onan parts from these folks at ASAP with great success- an excellent outfit who will help diagnose your issues.

Are you saying you successfully ran it on a 5 gallon can, but cannot run it on the main tank?

In that case, it is a fuel problem. I would look for a plugged fuel filter or a cracked or crushed fuel line first.

it would run for 15 to 20 seconds to 4 or 5 minutes .not consistently. it has a automotive style pump. it will suck gas from a 5 gal can but not from tank ,tank is full. goin to see if i can find a rebuild kit for carb. it had 1 small leak. i made a new gasket fixed it . this has been sitting for 3 or 4 yrs . it has 83 hrs on it . does anyone know of a place to get parts for these old onans? thanks matt

Try ASAP for parts- great company.

Sounds like a fuel pump issue.
