Zemco Driving Computers!

Been a big fan of these since the 80's and have fitted them to several vehicles.

Zemco stopped making them in the 90's I believe, but hey are still around... In fact I bought a few of NOS units in the last few years.
Prices are between $30 and $100, and thats amazing value for what they can give you!

I have ZT3, ZT4, ZT5, and DCS320 units
Thought this is a good place to discuss them!

They are great on Carburetor fueled vehicles, and I am part way through fitting a ZT4 to my Airstream Motor-home.

The system is pretty simple:
1/ Head unit, mounts on dash.
2/ Fuel flow sensor, reads fuel flow to the carb.
3/ Speed sensor, reads driveshaft revolutions with magnets.

With the above, it can tell you more than many modern cars.
Speed, distance, trip distance, average MPG, current MPG, GPH(Gallons per hour), DTE(Range), and more.
Very useful in a vehicle that dont have that!

Some units came with a Cruise control.

I would like to find the EFI conversion box they made, that somehow reads the EFI!

Anyone interested or have one, or knowledge???

I have several of the Zemco units as well! I always appreciated the information gathered over the years on several carbureted cars. I have recently install the Zemco unit on by 1982 Born Free with the carbureted 460 engine. Unfortunately, the engine compartment of the E350 is a hostile place for the flow sensor. I have been left stranded several times with significant leaks on the flow sensor at the head enclosing the rotating ball sensor. The thin paper gasket is completely inadequate and the gasoline smell leads to a panicked and very disagreeable spouse! I'm considering a polymer fusion bond which will render the flow sensor unrepairable but hopefully more fuel tight! One good thing about the confluence of current technology --- GPS systems make it very easy to calibrate the Zemco system.

Today, I won a DCS unit with the very rare EFI box...
I will report back when it arrives...
My plan is to have it inspected and try to copy it!

I picked up a ZT4 NOS unit off eBay last year, but haven't had time to get it installed yet. (Too many other projects). I hope to get some restoration mods done and back on the road this fall and will report back with results. In the meantime, I'll be watching for your results.

It's true! For the first time in more 30 years real progress is being made to adapt the Zemco Driving Computers and Cruise Controls to pre-OBDII fuel injection powered vehicles. Keyair's thread on AirForums is the place to follow developments!

Haven’t seen any updates for quite a while on either forum. I’m at the installation point in my project and I’m looking for ideas on where others have placed the fuel flow sensor.

How/where have any of you 454 owners placed the sensor?

The manual states that the sensor needs to be away from road grime hazards (debris and water, etc.) and kept below 200F, which could cause sensor failure. The only place I see in the fuel hardline between the mechanical pump and carburetor is right behind the radiator, which I’m sure pushes the 200F limit and quite likely the protection against water requirements.
