We do this now and then and it is a terrific way to explore. Naturally, we bring our bikes and we take a campground for two nights. (Yes, I really do use campgrounds occasionally). The deal is that we take off in one direction and spend the day biking with or without a noon destination. The next day we go in an opposite direction. When we move, if we found an interesting ride, we set up further away so as our bike trip the next day will connect us to the previous day's trip. It took us two weeks to get through Vermont, but we found so many interesting places and out of the way biking....and hills.

Speaking of hills, ever hear of the Kancamagus Highway in N.H? We camp our in Lincoln, N.H., primitive campsites run by the State and bike across to Conway. It is a full day's ride back and forth...110 Km I believe. But what great riding and views. I strongly suggest a west-to-east trip. However, traveling alone, you can leave your rig on one side in a private camp ground and bike across and spend the night in a B&B to return the next day. This called ''Senior Cycletouring''...but great fun exploring.........

Got bad knees Roadrunner, else this sounds like an interesting way to see the country side.

When we made a trip to Virginia in '97 we drove and hotel'd it but did not make any specific plans. When it got close to time to stop we would take off to some small town off the main highway and spend the night. We always tried to stop early enough so that we could look around the town after dinner. Did we ever find some neat places. Intend to do the same when we start doing our trips. Found that the small, out-of-the-way, non-tourest areas are much more interesting and actually have some amazing sights like an entire building made out of corn husks every year for their corn festival and one boasting the largest doll museum in world (it was huge).

453 days to freedom

WillYum, you are going to have FUN when you visit the eastern part of this country. Any place that could be reached by small ship or travelling canoe got European settlers in the 1600s. That's from someplace west of Montreal to St. John's or Ferryland, NL!!! & all of these places have fascinating 2-lane roads, which are best enjoyed at a Sunday driving speed. You sound like you all like to do this. I don't think any visitor can really see/enjoy/get to know an area unless he/she/they do these side road drives/bike rides........
