Hi,
Cochrane, a town of about 14,000 people is about 20 miles west of Calgary. Lethbridge is on the way to Sweetgrass, Montana where the border crossing we use to get to US is. It is about 1300 miles north of Las Vegas on Interstate 15. The trip south thru Montana and Idaho in October can bring snow, rain, ice, or sun. The bad weather is usually seen going over the Monida Pass in Montana or thru Idaho. I know little about Cochrane in northern Ontario but what I know is it is always colder in the winter than the Calgary area So regardless of which Cochrane your from Go South!!

Good advise Don. I've been to both, but prefer the one out West. Is there still a campground beside the Bow River, near a steel bridge. If memory serves correct, the park was operated by the Kiwana's?

Hi Brad,
The community-owned campground has moved about 1 km east from the old location. It's now called Bow RiversEdge campground. The old location is part of a semi-industrial area that will probably have houses on it in the next few years. The new cg has about 100 sites with some pull-thru's. Very nice, but still a couple of km's from downtown. There is also a new cg about 10-12km north on highway 22. It is called Big Hill Springs Campground. It is a full service cg with a Shell station with both gas and Diesel. Convenience store as well. Brad I mention these two as there is getting to be a shortage of campgrounds around Calgary. My understanding is that Pine Creek will now close to be turned into housing. It was one of the nicer cg's around here. There are also stories going around that Whispering Spruce at Balzac, just north of Calgary will soon close for the same reason. The other ones left in the immediate area are, KOA Calgary west, Calaway Park CG, Symons Valley CG, MountainView CG on the east end of Calgary about 10 km from the city limits and the ones mentioned above. Hope I haven't missed any. Most of these, excluding Calaway Park are open 12 months a year. Please check if you want to visit in the winter.
Don

Thanks for the info Don. We stayed in the mentioned c/g in '95 during the Stampeed.
I guess when developers come in with pockets full of cash, c/g owners don't have to think twice.....to bad though, but in all reality most of us would probably do the same..
Feel free to add these remaining c/g to the Alberta Campground review forum..if you wish
