Has the recent recession convinced you to stay home this winter. Fuel is cheap...are there bargains out there? has the low dollar impacted you?...........

Dear RV friends, the ONLY thing that keeps us from racing south .....is DW is still working, another year and 3 1/3 month????
Like always, we will travel here and there over the warmer part of the year 2009... The year 2009 OREGON will see us....

You forgot the stock market crash. and yes is the answer. Canceled my annual trip to Hilton Head. Gas prices are the least of my problems. Looking at a 30% drop in stock values, plus a 80 cent dollar are the real problem.

Still on the move but much less...just back from Canadys SC for Xmas and hope to head back down there early Jan. The big difference is that the rig stays put and we move to and from it

The only reason we are not travelling is work and winter!!!!
We will be South bound in March.
Last year Fuel was expensive but the $ was good!!
This year cheap fuel But low $.
If you want to find a reason not to travel there is always something.
So just get out there and Do It.
Have Fun
Rick

We opted for Florida this year instead of Ca. and Az. which we always enjoy....We also found that staying in a park for five months was a better deal than moving from place to place throughout the winter..
The big shocker was the decline of the Cdn. dollar, and the fact that we neglected to buy Am funds during the summer...
Gas prices are good now...maybe that helps to ease the pain of investments going down the drain......
Marg and Paul, spending the winter in Zephyrhills,Fl.

mathmatically speaking (putting on my nerd glasses-I had to redo the tape in the middle), the differences could be minimal.
assuming 10 miles to the gallon, trip of 1000 miles, and it took 5 days to do it.
When the dollar was near par, diesel was over $4 a gallon so you got 100 gallons of diesel for $400.
Today the dollar is around 70 cents, but diesel is $2.50 a gallon, so your 100 gallons cost $250 US, which converts to roughly $350 Cdn.
Your run of 5 days could cost $175 in overnight camping fees (thinking staying places avg $35 a night) converted to Cdn money is $250.
So, my numbers being a rough SWAG, for a 1000 mile trip that you lollygagged for 5 days, it cost you only 25 dollars more in todays world.
I know that there are many different variables(groceries etc) and I have totally simplified it, but the cost of doing business in todays economy could even be less than it was months ago. Granted, with the investments tanking, I would expect a fulltimer/part timer budget has to get tighter to accommodate the reality of less money in hand to play with. I am still a couple of years away from being in a position to fulltime, but I have started trying to figure out what level of financial stability/security would make it possible, and the impacts of changes in the $, economy etc. I also have to expect that my house might not be worth what it is now when I go to sell, and therefore will not have the equity that I want/need.

Everything needs to be put in perspective. In the winter 2002 many still went out to Arizona and the loonie was at .61 for a US dollar and it is a long trip. Today we go to Florida, ( 1/2 the distance and the dollar was .80 for a US dollar. Doesn't seem so bad and I would not cancel a trip over a few hundred dollars more. But if you are still a working age person and do not have a job it doesn't matter how good or bad the dollar is or how cheap the gas is it's tough times.
