Hi All.

We will be travelling in Canada in June and July. We understand about rabies certification and we have that. But someone told us that a certification from a vet withint the last month showing the pets be free of pests is required. It is the first we have heard of that. Has anyone else?

Thanks in advance

Canada is a member of the Pet Travel Scheme which allows pet carnivores (dogs, cats and ferrets) from any of the countries covered by the scheme to enter the country without quarantine provided they meet specified anti-rabies, blood sampling and anti-worm/anti-tick hygiene requirements.

To qualify for the scheme, the pet must:
1. Be fitted with a microchip.
2. Have been vaccinated against rabies at least once during the preceding three years.
3. Be blood tested to check the effectiveness of the Rabies vaccination.
4. Be issued with an Official Pet Passport (or a Pet Travel Scheme Certificate).

Dogs and cats being brought into Canada from a rabies-free country, as officially recognized by Canada, can enter Canada if accompanied by a certificate issued by an official government veterinarian, which states that rabies has not existed in that country for the preceding six month period, and the animals have been in that country for the preceding six month period, or since birth if younger than six months.
All animals are subject to veterinary inspection on arrival in Canada, and information about this procedure is available through Canada Food Inspection Agency. If evidence or suspicion of disease is found, the animals may be refused entry. Dogs and domestic cats, over 8 months, entering Canada from the United States will need certification, signed by a licensed veterinarian, that they have been vaccinated against rabies during the preceding 36-month period. This also applies to visitors wishing to bring a dog or domestic cat into Canada from a country other than the United States.

Dogs and cats from the U.S. that are at least three months old need signed and dated certificates from a veterinarian verifying that they have been vaccinated against rabies within the last three years. The certificate must clearly identify the animal.

The info I sent was gleaned from the inter net. We will be in Canada in June and July also. I understand there is a form that your Vet needs to fill out and sign as to vaccinations and health. I am calling our Vet this week for an appointment.

I have traveled both ways twice a year for the past two years and I have been asked by both border officals if the shots were up to date. They were and I replied yes. They never asked for the documents. From what I see the main things is to have an up to date rabbies shot and that the pet be in good physical condition.

Thanks everyone. That's what I understood. We have up to date rabies vaccinations and the paperwork. I'm not going to worry about it.

Your biggest threat will be returning to the USA with un eaten food . With all the food restrictions happening at US Border crossings, keep in mind you'll probably be asked to surrender your bacon, eggs, uncooked beef, chicken, dog food (canned) and what ever else the Border Agents deside that day. One couple headin south packed their lunch( sandwiches etc) and had to give them up at the border. They were denied permission to even eat them before they crossed. Guess the guards need to eat too.
