The Soo KOA? I was told they didn't take dogs!!!!!! In fact I've been told that no Canadian K0As take dogs.

Aside from the fact that I travel with two dogs, I think on general principle, I would put a taboo on any place with that policy. If anyone can refute that claim.....

LK, I have just looked through introductory section and the Canadian KOA locations/descriptions in the 2005 KOA Directory and there is no mention of dogs at any of the KOAs except one: KOA (Toronto West) which offers free pet sitting services. One would think that if dogs were not allowed at any - or individual KOAs - they would say so. Still, dogs or no dogs, the campground itself and all the facilities are very good.

Thanks j_m, that's interesting, very interesting. I was going to ask if they actually showed a dog icon as a positive indication that dogs are allowed.

I still see 6 foot tie on as totally unreasonable. I've reduced the chains my dogs are on to 8 feet by times, but that's it!!!!!! They do night security duty outside the truck. It works.

My other thought about K0As is size of site. What's that like? As you can gather from the above less than 30' across would be horrible to me. One can see why, if I really don't need hydro for a night, I will head to a treed unserviced sites.

not many if any private/provincial campgrounds are open year round in my area.
so, for off season camping we are pushed into ministy of forests user maintained sites.
many of these are charging $10 a night for no services and are being gated closed during off season because of their popularity.
lucky for us we are completely self contained and can camp anywhere it is reasonably level.
but we are always searching for new places ... so if you find a good fishig spot you can always send me a PM, I won't tell.

LK, I should add that we only overnight camp at KOAs if they are convenient relative to other choices. In these circumstances, site size is irrelevant. The Sault KOA, for example, is just the right distance so that it is our second night out or, returning home, the second to last before home. There are other private campgrounds but at KOA, you know they have met certain standards and know what you're getting. Cleanliness, security, no rowdyism are amongst those standards. As for the 6' leashes, I suppose that is to ensure that the dogs stay on-site. KOA sites are not that big and generally have little privacy between them.

j_m tight fitting parking lot style campgrounds are things to be avoided, unless absolutely necessary, like any parking lot. Not with dogs. It is just too unfair to the dogs. I can go on at length on the thing of going on holiday to be 'getting away from it all and to have a change' yet to have places where you are closer to your neighbors than you would be if you lived in an apartment. Not my style. It's one reason why I live where I do.

It doesn't bother us to stay a night at each of two KOAs during a 30-40 day trip. What's that, 6-7% at the most of nights camped? If we lose anything by staying at KOAs (remember, it's still camping), we make up for it in our experiences during our multi-day stays at provincial and national parks. To each his own. To stay on-topic, I can also recommend Awenda Provincial Park (Ontario).

j_m, most of the time I just stay one night at cgs. After all I'm not retired yet. 14 - 16 days away is my normal. Each cg is important. Give the girls some space and they don't mind open field 1/2 as much as a tent right at the end of their chains.

LK, it seems as if you're bound to have the last word on this topic, so I'm finished here.
