Can an Ontario-plated van pull a borrowed Michigan-plated travel trailer?

If I borrow my son's travel trailer with a Michigan license plate, can I tow it with my Ontario licensed van and bring it across the border? Is there a restriction how many times it goes back and forth across the border in a year?

If I may suggest...call border services for both countries to get the RIGHT info.

I beg to differ, I've done (in both directions) dozens of times. A trailer is a 'personal possession' according to customs, as long as the border agents are satisfied you have legal possession of the trailer there's no problem. Out of an abundance of caution get a letter from the owner saying they've lent it to you, take a picture of them holding it up next to their face, and a pic of their drivers license.

If it wasn't legal U-Haul would be in a LOT of trouble, almost all their rental trailers are US plated.

Sorry, you are not correct and you are lucky BSO's you have dealt with aren't familiar with the law. UHaul, Budget, AVIS and other rental companies fall under a completely different animal.

I believe you are confusing a 'vehicle' with a 'MOTOR vehicle'. I agree that if it was a motorhome there'd be an issue, but not a trailer.

I wasn't aware Avis, Budget and other companies rented TRAILERS in Canada. I've only ever seen U-Haul trailers.

Hi,
Sorry, no I am not confusing anything. A Canadian can NOT use in Canada or temporarily import for their own use a foreign registered vehicle, trailer, motorhome, boat to Canada unless they import and account for the goods, pay applicable taxes, have prior authorization from CBSA, comply with Transport Canada Regulations, etc. If it was that easy as you say, then any smart Canadian would buy the goods in the USA, register and insure in the USA and then use it in Canada...and not have to worry about Canadian laws.

I have been a Customs Attorney for 30 years and get this questions all the time. If he is merely transporting it, that is a different story. Provincial Laws will also come into play, but I only deal in Federal Legislation-but do as you wish...

So how does a rented US registered U-Haul trailer 'come under a different category' than any other US registered trailer?

Off hand I would think no ownership nor intent to own since it would be clearly marked as a rental.
