Money. If you want to come back to the USA, you better have some picture ID (e.g. driving license) and a birth certificate or a US passport, which serves both purposes. Starting in 2008, you must have a passport to return to the USA. And of yes, you need proof your automobile insurance is valid in canada - contact your insurer and they will issue you a Canadian-legal proof of insurance card. There` is usually no additional cost, but ask your insurer.

Mid May thru late August, though most people will like late June thru mid August the best. May can be very chilly and roads may be in bad shape yet from the winter weather. By late June things have usually been fixed up pretty well and the tourist industry is ready to welcome you. Snow can fly anytime in September and many campgrounds and gas stations close around Labor Day, so you probably want to be on your way home by then.

You should also ask for input in the CANADA regional forum.

PS: I moved this from Motorhome-General to the IRV2 General Discussion area for better exposure - it wasn't a "motorhome" topic at all.

For the official word on what you can do, etc. check Canada Customs Page for Visitors to Canada

Some extra blinds so you can sleep while it's still light out might help too.

the best time to travel the alcan in my mind is nov or dec or jan or feb. snow covers all of the ruts and bumps, not much traffic, only trucks and people who live in the north. take lots of money or do like my wife and i do use credit cards. my wife and i try to come south at least once a year and really enjoy the trip. we use passports to prove to american customs we are us citizens in case of another 9-11. take care
