Canada Highways

We are planning our summer trip which will take us into Canada. We will be traveling from Winnipeg to Calgary to Vancouver, via highways 1 and 5. How are those roads?

Thanks in advance,
Dean

They are great! Flat on the prairies and the mountains are a beautiful drive.

We live in California...when we went across Highway 1 several years ago I thought maybe the road had been closed. There were times when I couldn't see another vehicle. Loved it!

Had some of the steepest mountains I've crossed but, as mentioned, it was beautiful.

The gun embankments you'll see in the mountains are for triggering avalanches to control snow slides.

Roads are great, there are much more scenic routes though.

When we hit the the plains we didn't know what all the yellow stuff was. Actually saw trains of it stacked in open cars like coal.

So this is a pretrip test....what is yellow and covers half of Canada?

Canola flowers yellow in the fields. It is harvested after the seed turns black.
The yellow stuff in the open boxcars is probably sulphur shipped from the Alberta Oilsands.

Not much for RV parks Winnipeg to Calgart.

Chech out the Moose Jaw tunnels

Likely reservations required for Calgary area parks. Definitely required for Banff area.

Take a day trip up the highway from Lake Louis to Jasper, at least as far as the Columbia Icefields.

Fuel up before BC border.
