We own a motorhome lot in Hilton Head, South Carolina. Does anyone know what the ramifications of buying a motorhome in the US and having it registered in SC. The unit would spend a min of 9 months a year in the US but we may want to bring it home for short local vacations in Canada. Is there a problem doing this?

Probably best to check with a tax lawyer. I am aware that SC has a Motorhome tax which is quite high, and I believe you may have problems bringing the MH into Canada with SC plates and a Canadian home address. They may make you import it and pay GST. I would check with Canadian Customs.

You will also have Insurance to ponder over as well..I would make a few calls to Customs and run that by them..I remember a fellow that had a big Caddy with US plates removed from His drive way years ago thanks to a Customs Officer that lived on His street...Never did hear the full story but never seen the Caddy again I think it was sent back to the States or that was the talk in the street but things have changed for that was 20years ago plus...Bushman

You can own a hundred MH's in the USA. However a Canadian citizen with a Canadian DL cannot bring a vehicle into Canada with US plates unless you import it and pay the applicable taxes. Period !!!!
