Thanks for the gas report though. I take it your trip was AOK?? Tell us about it. How was the weather ?
P.S. Did ya happen to run across any of my favorite.....BakeApple. I understand there pretty much available now Only in Labrador?
I think I've kind of already said I've had a yen to do this just past trip for a long time. I wanted to wait until I could drive between Blanc Sablon and Baie Comeau, but.... 2009 is long time ahead.

I had been as far as Red Bay Before. All along that older stretch of road are lots of interesting places to get out and stretch your legs and some marked hiking trails. & I enjoyed this historical sites then. Time got limited, so I severely shortened what I did between Blanc Sablon and Cartwright. Shall we say, the road is sufficiently new that an e-mail to the Minister of Transportation is in mental composition (signage and leg stretch stops). Everywhere on the new stretch will need some encouragement to develop and let all travellers know what one can do. What's wonderful is the komatiks and snowmobiles, left parked where they will be used come snow. Trust.

On the night boat (a freight boat BTW)from Cartwright to Happy Valley - Goose Bay I saw several icebergs and one whale tale. Another passenger let me look through her binoculars, but I didn't manage to chat up the guy with the Canon EOS digital camera and lenses to 270x magnification well enough to get a link to his photos. Pity. Beyond that it was too dark.

One highlight in the Happy Valley area was the Northwest River Beach Festival entertainment. I got to see Shirley Montigue again, but missed others. I had the feeling the audience was loaded with talented musicians, who all know each other. The remarks to and from all were flying. But even if I heard the words they were over my head. Well, been there before. After all I moved here 22.5 years ago.

On the way to Churchill Falls there were two very interesting things. One I shall tell once I get an e-mail with pics. The other is about Osprey. Churchill Falls Labrador Company (CFLCo) is now the 9th largest power plant in the world. It's resevoirs don't hold anywhere near the largest amount of water, but the drop in height creates the power. (I must get a good link on that). I have photos from the tour. Cameras were allowed. But before and after the town were osprey nests. The number of osprey has increased with the increase in the size of the reservoirs & I have pics. One had a tending parent who very much didn't like me being out of my truck. I have hopes of these pics.

In Labrador City and Wabush, it rained. It was regatta weekend, which shuts down both towns. The places I wanted to visit were closed. So, I mosied on. Onto Manic V and Manic 2. Both also give tours. Again to do justice, I need links. There's supposed to be a video on line re. construction.

My French has improved since I last made such a foreray into QC and it helped. All the way along I found Franglais was good lingo and I got lots of really great help figuring out where and how to get what I wanted. The tour guides at Manic V wanted to know what I did to know so much about power plants. All credit there goes to the CFLCo tour guide. Then there was the hunt for a place to wash my rig after so many kms of gravel roads. I sure landed on my feet. The lass who did the wash really put herself out. When she was through, we were driving pretty. She went whole hog right down to the pedicure - ah, the little extra of a spray on the tires to give them a wet saucy look.

Oh, an alert on the Quebec ferry. They don't make you pay before you get on board. They expect to pay on board and you don't get off until they do. I have a comments form to make my suggestions on that!! On any other ferry I have taken, you don't get on until you pay.

& Gaspe, well Gaspe is the road much travelled by, these days. It's not like what it was some 20 years ago. The muncipalities along that shore are on the ball, IMO. Most have created a "Halt Muncipal", freely translated Municipal Rest Stop. Some of those permit overnight stays. Certainly late in the afternoon of day 2, many of those were chock-a-bloc with rvs.

Oh yeah, the roads are loaded with rvs all the way through Atlantic Canada and the very eastern QC.

What I would give for a preview at this point. This is the first rough report.

Labrador will always be a place for the venturesome!!
