Hi Brad, what make and model GPS do you have? I don't have one yet but plan to have one before setting out late Aug. I recall someone posting elsewhere something about a black out/ or loss of maps but the site was linked into a google search or a site about GPS where owners could post their evaluation of the models they own. I got to it by following links, doubt that I can duplicate the search but I'll try.

Cheers Willis

It would depend on the setup.

I have used an eTrex Vista for navigation by foot, canoe, ATV, truck, and helicopter.

It had a memory where I could download the maps I wanted depending on where I was going.

I use my GPS always when travelling. I have a Pioneer AVIC Z1 operating on its 30 Gig server. It is most handy when going through a city and directing which lane to be in prior to the next turn.

Hey Willis.....I have a Nextar...works great when it works (just like Me ). Unfortunately I can't return it now . I also have a Magellan hand held which is much better for information (alt. speed, distance, compass etc...but has no map capabilities.....

Maybe the nextar just needs to have upgrades installed. Will find out when I get home...

I purchased a Garmin Nuvi 660 last October. I has worked great - would not be without it now. I purchased a bean bag mount and can use it in my motorhome and in my toad. You can even use it on foot if you are walking in an area that it is included in the mapping. It also has Bluetooth and makes a much better speaker phone than the speakerphone on our cell phones. We have used it in Canada and the US and have had not trouble getting a signal anywhere.

Turns out my large screen GPS, started to work at the border on re-entery to Canada...Seems the only thing needed to make it work in the USA is a data up-date.
Sheeeessshh!!

Hello Willis..thought I'd check back to see if you had desided on or had any GPS models in mind?
Canadian Tire carries a wide range of models and prices. Also, I purchased one through e-bay(Magellan) with good results.
Many people use the TomTom model.

During my recent travels, I noticed many many gps units mounted on passing dashboards, so they are becoming more and more popular...and for good reason.

Hi Brad, well as a matter of fact we do have a Garmin i5 in mind. I know it's not the latest or have all the bells and whistles but the price is right @ 2,100,000 HBC pts I still have a ways to go yet, but it's within reach before we set out on the longer trips this year.

Cheers Willis

Thats great Willis. Is than model loaded with maps? My first GPS (Magellan SportTrak)is a basic unit with no maps, but loaded with other features.
Try e-bay as well...hundreds of new GPS units available there as well.
My second one(Nextar) has the large 7" screen, making it very easy to read at a glance.
I know they're great to have and use....

Keep Us posted..

Hi Brad, I don't know much about them but I do believe the maps are pre loaded when you get them. Also it has a USB port and a CD comes with them. I believe you plan your trip and then just follow it. but then again I'm a green horn at this.

Garmin i5 StreetPilot
* Model i5
* GPS receiver with built-in antenna and speaker
* 12-24V adapter
* USB interface cable
* Vehicle suction mount
* MapSource City Select DVD with full coverage
* Full-unlock quick-start guide
* 3 x 2.8 x 2 cm H
* 1-year warranty
Garmin i5 Street Pilot Link

Cheers Willis
