Anyone using GPS with built in mapping in Canada? How detailed is it (back roads, small town streets etc.) We are looking at the Garmin 7200 for the motorhome and toad but not too sure on how much detail the built in Garmin mapping software has for travelling in Canada. Anyone using a Garmin product (with built in City Navigator) that can give opinion on how useful it is?
Thanks,
Don

Until recently, I was using a Garmin eTrex Vista. It died.
I also used the Mapsource (Garmin) software to download maps to it.
Overall I liked the mapsource, it is the basement level product, but, as with all garmin products, after purchase, you can download upgrades from the website.
I found the roads, including BC logging roads to be fairly comprehensive, accurate, and up to date. With downloads it got more up to date info.
Compare your local store prices with these guys.
online place in CalgaryThey are nicely priced and I have dealt with them on a couple of points with excellent results.
questions?

I have a Garmin 3610 and use their Map Source Software and their City Navigator v6.0 maps. The detail for Canada is very good. I also have MS Streets and Trips 2006 and it's quite good as well.

I have a Magellan Sport Trac. It isn't upgradable, has no street maps. I couldn't tell you how to get there, but with the little Etch-A-Sketch window, I can find my way home.(saves on bread crumbs)
I'd like to have a unit that can be up graded, in colour, voice, and full of info...but for now, just knowing which direction I'm going is fine. But really it has a lot of good features, just no road maps....Brad

Thanks for the replies guys, it is good to know that there is detail on the Canadian maps. Thanks "Big Kid." I have been to their website and it looks great.

May just check out the prices of a better unit, when we head south. Any recommendations?

Have heard a few good things about Tom Tom (think thats the right name) but for now I still rely on the Caa trip tik to SHOW ME how to get to our inlaws in Missouri and then to get me back home!

I used to use Streets and Trips 2005 and found it to be very good. I recently purchased a Garmin iQue M5 hand held GPS with the maps for North America. This thing is a pocket PC and a GPS. It's a little hard to get used to but once you have it mapped out you are amazed how accurate it is. This thing talks to you and has detail down to the smallest country road at the cottage. While driving it gives you the standard direction, speed and even gives you the addresses of the properties as you pass them. I plan to use it when we take off for Texas in April and I will let you know how the USA maps work out.

Does this GPS have to be up graded for USA streets, Brywick?
I use a Magellan, which I will exchange for a street GPS. The magellan does all that I would like..except show street names.
Always something to spend the pension cheque on...

No it comes with the complete set of maps for the USA. The only problem is memory, I bought a 1 Gb SD card and I have put on everything from Montreal to the state of Texas and it almost took up the whole card. What you have to do is either get a 2 GB card or add and then delete maps as you travel. It allows for way points, places of interest and a bunch of detail that I probably wouldn't use.
I planned my route from Kawartha Lakes to Texas with a little reading of the manual.
