Hi folks,

I plan on moving to Ontario this fall from Alberta. I have a HDT out here that's registered as a private vehicle and insured as such. What is involved in moving and doing the same thing in Ontario? Also I'm picking up a new-to-me 5th wheel in Michigan and bringing it over the border in September. Any great RV parks that I should put on my list of "must" visit from say, Port Huron to Kincardine along the Lake Huron coast that I could visit with my new mobile home?

thanks all.........

Hi JWills, these are my stomping grounds.

My Motor Home is registerd as a private vehicle, you should not have a problem with registration in Ontario. Comming from Alberta you will have to get your vehicle "safety checked" before you can license it in Ontario.

As far as RV parks are concerned, most parks up the coast from Port Huron/Sarnia will be closing by mid October due to frost.

There are some beautiful "Provincial Parks" on the way to Kincardine such as the Pinery, Point Farms, Inverhuron, Mc Greggor and Sauble Falls. You can go on line and check these out at www.ontarioparks.com/english/reservations

Close to Grand Bend you will find some RV Parks which are open year round.

I hope this helps,

Henry.

Hi Barb and Henry,

Thanks for the answer! The website for the provincial parks won't open or is unavailable or something but we will be looking for a RV park with all the fixin's to try out our new to us Mobile Suites...my HDT (heavy duty tow vehicle)is a Volvo 610 highway tractor that I've been operating as my tow vehicle. I'm wondering if I can do the same in Ontario as I've done in Alberta and that is insure and register it as "non-commercial" and save a lot of money. It also more than doubled my mileage pulling a big 5th wheel and if I have to stop, well, I stop. The trailer doesn't push this tow vehicle around.

thanks for helping out,

John

Hi John.

If you need something specific about this area please let me know and I will find it out before you move here.

Do you plan to live in your RV year round? How long is your RV? Do you have to commute on a daily basis, such as going to work?

There are some private RV Parks along the west coast of Ontario which are open year round.

For the Provincil Parks just type it in and Google it (ontarioparks.com)

If your truck is licensed as a private vehicle/RV now, then it will be transferd as such.

Henry.

The long and the short of this Henry is that we are looking for an RV park to try out our new to us 36' Mobile Suites 5th wheel for a couple of nights. My new lady isn't too familiar with RVing and lives in that vicinity so I thought when I come down from Alberta we could spend a couple of days to give her a taste of how great it is. I want full hookups, a nice, quiet campground that will fit the trailer and the volvo without complications, drive thru or backin sites don't really matter. I've looked at MacGregor golf and RV park and that sounds good but we wanted to go north up the Lake Huron coast from Port Huron/Sarnia from the States. I'll be fully retired in just a few short weeks and my new flame has a house in the Owen Sound area so no, no overwintering unless we head south. Can you give recommendations on Woodland Lake RV Resort, Oakridge Resort in Thedford, Klondyke Trailer Park(north of Pinery) or the Ponderosa Family Camground in Forest? By their ads it sounds like what I'm looking for but being somewhat jaded when looking at advertisements, personal experience is what could persuade me......

Thanks,

John

Hello John.

If you are looking for a quite RV park check out this one:

Green Acres Campground and RV park www.greenacrescamp.com it's situated just two miles south of Kincardine, west off HWY 21 on the 12th. Concession of Huron, The ph. # is (519)-395-2808.

I can recommend this place.

There is one other place just east of Kincardine on a large inland lake called:

"Fishermans Cove" this is an RV park with "Big Rig Pull Thru Sites"
You can check them out at www.fishermanscove.com ph. # (519)-395-2757. Freinds of ours have a three season site there and love it. Do to the amount of people/campers this place is not as quite as the Green Acres.

Enjoy camping in mid-west Ontario.

Henry.

John: I might be able to answer one of your queries about your registration in Ontario. I have a class 6 Int'l 4400 and because it's over the 4600KG limit, I must maintain a CVOR and have the truck inspected yearly and display the sticker in the window. Ontario has the stupid rule that if your truck is over that weight it's "commercial" only. Now, you have an edge with your sleeper as you can title your truck as a "motorhome" in Ontario if you perform a few mods to it to satisfy 5 of 7 requirements (cooking, sleeping, pottie, dedicated external 120V outlet, etc.,) or something like that. A number of friends have done this, one with a Volvo 770 another with a Mack Vision etc.. This way you avoid that CVOR nonsense with it's yearly $100.00 fee plus inspection costs.

I have camped at Fisherman's Cove near Kincardine and at 61' overall length found their pull-thru's adequate. Our trailer is an '05' Mobile Suites 38RL3

The friend with the 770 is currently building a Smart Car deck on the back. He also tows an '05' Mobile Suites 38RL3. Pity you're not arriving sooner as a few folks have organized a Mobile Suites mini rally for eastern Ontario in August.

Hi BStark,

thanks for your offer of assistance, I've sent a private message to you, who knows maybe 2-3 with my fat fingers. Thanks for your assistance on the campground info update as well.

I checked on the Mobile Suites owners site and see that the mini rally is August 13-16 in Kingston, too bad as I won't be able to make that one!!

John

thanks Henry,

I've gone thru at least 3-4 Camping Ontario search engines and neither one of your recommended RV parks were there and they both look great, more to what I've been looking for. Thank you helping me out and I'll be sending emails to book a site once I've figured out how many days to drive to Michigan and pickup the Mobile Suites to bring across the border!!

John
