Information on carrying a gun into Canada

When I went over the border last year I was asked about pepper spray and firearms and that was it. Cursory inspection and I was allowed to pass.
I wish you could carry pepper spray as I prefer that to a gun and it's useful against a variety of animals whether they be two or four legged. But pepper spray is considered a deadly weapon to our friends in the great white north.
I have a permit to carry, but I leave the weapons home. I have never needed the use of deadly force in the US and I think Canada is safer than it is here.

I have a Mossurg 500 pistol grip 18 1/4" barrel and will be mailing it back home before going into Canada and getting it mailed back after I get back into the US. It is not worth getting caught with one as there have been horror stories of peopel trying.

When we spent the summer in Canada & Alaska in 2002, our traveling partner brought in a shotgun for protection while we were fishing in bear country. And yes, there really were a lot of bears wandering around when we were fishing the back country. Had no problem obtaining the permit, though it slowed down the border crossings because each time we crossed (we were in and out between AK and Canada) the border agent had to inspect the paperwork and weapon and then seemed obligated to do at least a walk-through search of both of our coaches, since we were traveling together. I guess they were just fulfilling the requirements of their procedure, since they were all quite friendly.

maybe you can rent a safe deposit box or a storage locker on the us side of the border?
