This summer I have stayed in several parks, both private and provincial. Do you have a personal preferance. What are your likes or dislikes? and why?

When I am traveling to or from my destination I usually stay at a private campground such as KOA or the equivalent because these campgrounds usually are clean, safe, and close to a main highway. When I get to my destination, I usually stay at a county/ state/provincial park because I like the 'great out of doors' and the activities associated with being outside, e.g. hiking, bird watching, photography. The latter usually, but not always, are quiet and more or less serene.

We tend to stay at public campgrounds. Except for 2 extended stays (got tired up popping up/down in the cold), we try to look for public campgrounds. Private campgrounds tend to not "measure up". In 25+ yrs of camping, I can count the number of private campgrounds we have stayed in on one hand. We generally try to check out all the campgrounds when we stay in a new area (public & private). Experience has taught us that we will tend to prefer the pubic campgrounds over the private. I just wish we could stay longer in the public campgrounds. We tend to camp when we work far away. Some times a week or two lasts far longer. In the past 2 yrs, our shortest campground stay was 3 days, the longest was 27 days.

Well Bob...Here goes. I actually prefer P/P's just because any disturbances are usually dealt with "pronto". Sites are usually more private and less crowded. Prices are getting to pretty much be the same as private parks, with less hook-ups.(bad) I REALLY dislike a $12.00 reservation fee, PLUS if you have to cancel, a $9.00 cancellation fee in provincial Parks.
I don't recall being in a P/CG that wasn't "cramped" together.
I guess the bottom line is a personal choice.

Public or government run parks by far for me.!!!
Although, solar panels here we come!!!
So far for the PPs I've used this summer electrical connections are on open ground space with few trees. Dry camping sites are the nicer sites. More trees defining the sites.
Open fields with sites that put you closer to your neighbors than you would be in an apartment building are more often the ones found in private cgs. That is not what I call getting away from it.
KOA has a reputation up here for being anti-dog, which makes me anti- them. It's having two dogs who like doing outdoorsy things that got me back into camping. I'm definitely camping. I'd much rather cook and eat outside.

We're full services destination campers. We did tent camping including portaging canoes over mountain trails, pop-ups, trailers and all the good stuff in earlier times.
Having arrived at a semi respectable age, I find we like our creature comforts and a dry, warm and snug environment tends to minimize the ever increasing aches and pains!
So our idea of roughing it these days is an overnight blacktop at Wally's while travelling to destination.!!!

well, we neither camp at prov parks or private campgrounds.
we usually camp at user maintained forestry sites.
because we camp off season right through the winter most organized campgrounds are closed.
cannot recall ever having power, water, or sewer hookups will camping.
matter of fact we don't usually even have any neighbours when/where we camp.
when we have had fellow campers nearby they are usually retired and considerate.

Nothing surpasses full hook up sites like those offered at most private campgrounds.
However there are many, many, larger sites at Provincial Parks in Canada or State Parks in the USA that have spectacular views and have much more privacy.
For weekend trips or Holiday Weekend trips, S.P. or P.P. are the way to go!
For longer stays, private campgrounds with full hook ups cannot beat having all the comforts of home in your RV.
Mike.

Hi Brad!
In the U.S., I prefer state park campgrounds, and COE campgrounds. The list for my preference includes...

no upcharge for the number of kids I have
no extra fees for guests visiting my campsite
no deposit for my firering
no extra charge if I have an A/C or electric heater[/list]

We dry camp on weekends all over southern Ontario. No campgrounds. No services. No cost. We stay on site at craft shows, with permission of course, from May thru to end of November. During the winter we go south and appreciate full hookups in a destination resort with lots to do.

Another way to put this might be, who goes out to enjoy the out of doors & who goes just to see tourist sites?
I am much more on the 'outdoors' style, as is Novi, as is Rockman, and Brad too.
I feel that I have little in common with the Wally World 'souls'. Wally World only in dire emergency, thank you. Pure ugh!!!
Or another one, when out on the road, how many prefer to cook and eat outdoors?

Hey Kopit, it's whatever turns your crank
I don't knock the backcountry campers and do not expect them to share my likings.
