You dont need a passport book.... if you are driving then you can get the border passport cards instead.. and very inexpensively. You only need a passport book if you're flying in/out of US/Canada. Same card works for driving into/from Mexico as well.

In the last three years we have cross into Canada in several different provinces. At each entry the border agent has said "Let me see your passports."

As of June 1, 2009, everyone from every country arriving in Canada by air, land and sea has needed a passport even the USA.

Visitors from any country other than the U.S. have always needed a passport to enter Canada. On the other hand, because of a friendly border crossing agreement between Canada and the United States, Canada Border Services did not require U.S. citizens to present a passport to enter Canada. This friendly border crossing agreement used to be mutual; however, now the WHTI requires that U.S. citizens have a passport to return home. In this way, passport requirements for Canada and U.S. borders are different on paper, but, are in practice, the same. Canada will not allow a U.S. citizen into the country who does not have the proper documentation to return home.

If you're not going to fly anywhere overseas in the next 10 yrs then just get the passport card. It's 1/3 the price of a passport 'book' and will allow you drive into either Canada or Mexico.. not fly.. just drive. In order to fly into either Canada or Mexico you need the original passport book. The same is true to return.

Same applies to ship also. Must have full passport for entry by water or air. As stated card is way cheaper than full passport but requirments for issue is the same for both.

No - you don't need a passport to get into Canada, but you do need one to get back into your home country. Don't you just love the paranoid bureaucracy that Homeland Security generated!!

Problem is, if you enter Can/Mex on the Passbook and have some emergency that requires you to fly home, you are stuck. You can't fly back. RV accident? Medical problem? Family illness? Sorry - you have to drive back somehow.

I worked for US Immigration for a few years: A passport is a document your home country issues to you to let other countries know your home country will accept you back. A visa is a document issued by another country allowing you to apply for entry to the issuing country. Canada, Mexico as well as many other countries waive visa requirements for US citizens but I believe they do not waive passports like they used to. There are some special cards that will allow travel to Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean but they do have travel limitations. If you are only going to visit Canada one of the passport cards may meet your needs but don't forget Canada can refuse your entry even if you have a valid passport, birth certificates and a whole bunch of other documents. They are not obligated to allow you to enter their country just like the US refuses entry to certain people no matter what documents they possess.
