Also, there are lots of things to see after driving south across the Mackinaw bridge.

As was stated above, the price of gas is substantially higher in Canada, i.e. the more OP drives in Canada, the more it will cost.
Currently the price of gas in the Toronto area is about US$4.30 / US gallon, compare that to about $2 / gal. south of the border.

I would recommend you drive I 90 all the way past Chicago and then I 94 to I69 and cross over at Port Huron. I 90 by Chicago can be busy so you could by pass it with many routes. The farther south you are the better the weather should be.

Well better late then never, thought I would post how things went.
We elected to cross at sweet grass Montana. Seeing as there is a 48hr window needed I was concerned about timing when hitting the border. Meaning, if the border crossing was 4000kms away, it would be difficult to gauge when we would be there. Also driving with temp tags on an RV and toad across several states just didn't feel speaking to me for whatever reason.
We encountered possibly the most rude border agent on our Canadian side but other than that border crossing was uneventful.
Upon entering Alberta we hit VERY high winds 100km/hr gusts. Our poor
new to us coach had an awning broken (did a in the spot clamp down). The drive through the prairies was as expected but allowed us to barrel through it in no time. Was nice to pass through the Great Lake region (nice area) and then stop in Quebec for cheap beer at Costco. Hit New Brunswick and the home stretch was fairly straight forward with the exception that I found out the headlights in my coach downright suck the hind titty.
All good and thanks for all the suggestions, we will certainly hit them in our next run going west to Vancouver!

I may be too late but I'll post anyway.
Stay away from Sweetgrass as I was a longhaul driver and Sweetgrass is the worst crossing to go thru. They go by the letter of the law and you better be squeaky clean or they will find something to mess up your crossing.

I have already crossed but thanks!
You are correct about that border crossing having an unfriendly aura about it though. I couldn't get over the brash manners and lack of patience if a question was asked. Pretty sure last I checked, I am as much a citizen as the border person working there. One guy yelled at me and scolded me because I didn't understand what he was asking of me. Was my first time ever encountering such rude and unprofessional behaviour at any border crossing, including global ones away from NA.
