I agree with you Little Kopit. Although its still winter, a new thread may help us all to feel better, to the NEW and up-coming Spring.
The noticable longer hours of daylight is one thing that makes me feel good. LK has heard the sparrows, and I know a sure sign spring is about to be "sprung" is when I see more people doing more outdoorsie things.
I say Bring It On!!!!

& I saw other signs of spring on the way to work, lots of them - potholes!!!!!
& whatever they do for patches at this time of the year just don't take, frost heaves them out
Just wait until the plowed snowbanks melt and we see all the pop cans and other "flowers of spring" emerging.
Downunder today is considered the last day of summer. I have to asked why they say that when we have 21 more days to the equinox.

well I will be sad to see winter end.
it marks the end of another camping season for me.
actually last outing is usually easter week.
then it is home and garden work until september.
oh, and odd jobs to the camper.
latest modification is camper outside lock covers.
winter grime, moisture, and salt always seized the locks up at the most inconvenient times.
took an outdoor power double outlet cover and hack sawed into 2 individual covers, some double sided foam tape mounted the cover nicely over each outside camper lock.

Rockman, how come you quit so early? I mean like the start of the average camping season isn't until some time in May on this side of the border.
Also, by garden, do you mean yard, veggies, flowers, shrubs, landscaping???

spring comes sooner out west.
with spring comes the bugs, bears, brats, and boomboxes.
in the past we have camped right into june but you must travel further into the bush than a weekend would permit.
camped during the valentine's week.
it snowed and blowed all week.
warmest temp during sunny periods minus 5c, coldest was minus 20c not counting windchill.
garden does mean landscaping and veggies.
we try to companion garden but the biggest problem for us harvesting before the wildlife beat you to it.

Yours trully is an organic gardener. I don't go camping until the garden is in. For one thing I need the truck to haul the organic nutrition.
No, I haven't had to worry too much about competition with wildlife, but I have been known to say "hello" to Mr. Moose because he was too near my turnips. (rather than stay still and stare at that magnificent specimen).

My garden borders on a field and in the field is the village of groundhogs. They love lettuce and young bean sprouts. Last year I made a sign, a picture of a ground hog in a red circle and a red stripe going diagonally through it....they can't read anyway, so come around.
Does not keep me from camping........BTW LK..You are hauling compost in the same vehicule that you use for camping.......sure hope you're not hauling manure!

Well, Roadrunners, if what I've seen/read is true you have more than one set of wheels.
& yes, my sole set of wheels does it all. Soap, water and a scrub brush take care of everything. Once dry you would sit on the tailgate!!! & Rememaber I'm still employed. It takes time to put in a garden.

I used to put in a large veggie garden, but with the kids gone, its just as cheap and easy to get our produce at the grocers. We do grow peppers, tomatoes, onions, and grapes...
What we buy probably isn't as good as home grown, but then we're out RVing, rather than pulling weeds, watering, and chasing neighbourhood cats away.

Uh, uh, plant catnip, let the neighborhood cats do pest control. Often, I plant the catnip at the end of the onion bed or the beet bed. It doesn't matter if onions get rolled on, since that just helps the bulbs grow and by the time the catnip is big enough the beets are harvested.
I was thinking that cats might deal with groundhogs too.
The next spring. I take a clump of catnip and dig it up and just go plunk it on the ground outside the garden, but near to it, where I might like to have a cat show up.
My neighbor, 10+ year old Frisky, who is still my Chief Pest Control Officer, patrols the garden regularly and still wins the territorial disputes with other cats. & I, well, I haven't had mice beating me to the pea harvest.
Cats do not scratch enough to make any significant inroads into germination, etc.

we have a large veggie garden which we share with the local, squirrels, deer, and occasional black bear.
my two dogs keep the cats on the run.
I live on the side of a mountain so even though we receive over 400" of rainfall a year, after a couple of dry days you must start watering.

I used to have two HUGE black and tan german shepards ( both male) that kept ALL local cats in check. We don't have them now, due to the fact we RV and have no one to tend them when we're away. Now neighbours cats and Skunks are starting to hang around.
I'll bet the black bears pretty much eat what they want, eh rockman.
