Big Kid, have you done the Canadian route east of Sault Ste. Marie.
Much to be preferred IMO.
Fewer cities, fewer km. Rte 17 SSM to Ottawa and its extension down to Montreal has only by-passes for Sudbury and Ottawa. Plenty of places to stop if you want to and the traffic doesn't knock you out.
In Montreal head for Champlain Bridge and onto Rte. 20. I've been through Montreal in 45 minutes. But watch that you don't try going through Montreal at a meal hour.

Kopit,
I have done all the options it seems.
I do like the Rte 17 east of SSM, its almost BCish in its hills, twists and turns. The remoteness is nice too.
I found going south at Sudbury down to TO a bit of a pain, especially with a trailer.
I lived south east of Montreal for a year many moons ago, and have realized when you drive a pickup, you can't keep up.
Going through the US is an option I am considering, we think we might do the ferry across just to say we did, and to check out the area. Mostly because - its where we haven't been.
So many options, soo many miles, and the price of diesel is getting high. woe is me.
back to the thread topic though:
Hey Roadrunners, I almost forgot to mention.....
Drumheller, Alberta - if you are at all into dinosaurs or know someone(young males 4-11 yrs old) that would like to see pictures of you and dinosaurs, it is worth it. A fair number of campgrounds nearby, and really quite fascinating.

Begging for a reply are you? Along the lines of how can Alberta, Ontario and BC residents claim to speak for Canada, when they don't admit there is an eastern Canada.
Or in road directions.
Not to go south at Sudbury, that's a waste. Lovely country keeping to 17 right around Ottawa from Ottawa down to Montreal. Why tie yourself up with the city? Unless that's what you're touring.
I stayed a a nice cg just west of North Bay. In October, I could pick out whatever I wanted.
Now, for cities, I've not spent much time around Quebec City and my ancestors fought at the Plains of Abraham. Shame to say, I have not visited them. Have you?

guess i am a western canada odd ball.
have lived all over canada, but prefer the west coast.
the "rock" is on my "to do" list.
have been to the little rock? PEI.
LK, i spent some time in quebec city and visited the plains, pick a sunny day and you will enjoy the walk, just don't stand too close to big bertha when she goes off.
for now i am content with the backroads of bc.

We piddled along this past summer, going from one national park to another, using private and provincials when necessary, so about 80% of the route and campgrounds were new to us. Really enjoyed Riding Mtn NP and Prince Albert NP. Found Elk Island NP OK but in the grip of money-saving-bureaucracy. Cypress Hills (SK side) Interprovincial Park is one of our favourites.
Parts of the Trans-Canada on the prairies are still 2 lanes. In the past, have found the wind and road surface combine to make driving/towing interesting between Moose Jaw and Medicine Hat. The Yellowhead (Hwy.16) parallels the old Red River cart trail that ran from Portage la Prairie to Saskatoon and beyond. If you're running south from Edmonton to Calgary, go west of the main drag as soon as possible and hook onto the Cowboy Trail; it's right down your alley.

Drove from Ottaw to Victoria and back last summer, in three weeks. Found #17 in Ontario not in good shape from Ottawa to Sudbury. Somewhat better Sudbury to the border. Took #16 to Edmonton. Not in good shape from Brandon to Saskatoon. Much better Saskatoon to Edmonton. Edmonton to Vancouver good, but watch the Coquahalla. The winds can be extremely strong. On the way back I drove the Princeton to Kelowna and then up to #1. Transcanda is good in Alberta. Better than #16 in Saskatchewan. I found that the view was better going east on #17 and going west. If I was going to do it again I would consider going in the US at least one way. Cost of gasoline in Northern Ontario can get extreme. I was paying up to 1.20 a litre.

Well, you didn't get caught in the construction that propably got funded slowly.
What about taking Route 11 and seeing more of the country.
Re gas prices: SHAME & reality check Please consult our current regulated prices Automotive fuel order of April 12, 2007 Note that the lowest price for regular gasoline is $1.166 on the Avalon Peninsula.
I say shame that Canucks don't know more about their country and say they should travel more. & I say reality check because you need to know what all are paying.
But good that you may be reading here.
& please be aware that it disturbs me that people let themselves be so unaware. It's quite a contrast to the very high turnout for the French Presidential election, where people showed they care.
