Been dere, done dat. Won't do it again!

I brought over an '85 Buick Regal once. Here in Canada the odometers must be in kilometers, the headlights must go on when you turn the ignition key. The vehicule was impounded on the U.S. side for 72 hours..and I live three hours from the border. To top it off they impouned it for an inspection so I put a few marks around, traps sort of, and when I recuperated the car, it hadn't been touched. Not only that, there are certain models which are not allowed here, imports from the States that is. Oh yes..GST mean anything to you?

You don't save much. The real deal is to do it like the boat and stock car owners..they keep it down there. You'd be surprised at the number of pleasure craft on Lake Champlain with Canadian flags flying off their sterns.

Ok Jim, Thanks. I figured it would be straight forward...GST at border, PST when registering in Canada, swallow the Exchange and presto... ya got a new T/V. I was wondering how this would work so I e-mailed transportation Canada last week.. and as expected,... I still haven't heard from anyone. Our tax dollars at work! Maybe they were at Lunch!

Call Brad, call. 800#. You have to wait and wait and wait, but in the end it beats waiting for an e-mail.

I wanted to be sure that there was nothing besides GST for a 'not-powered-on-it's-own' item like a TC and I did this. Don't ask me the number, long out in the trash, that is.

Make a trip of a week or more in length and you have $750 GST free dollars. Like 24 hours is $50 GST free, etc. When I see you in person I will tell you all about the HST.

Hi Brad;I got into the idea in 2000 for a 5er money was high then.It can be done You will save some now with the low $ the Border charge GST PST and $250.import tax Trailer must go for a inspection at say CTC I think it was a $90-100.or close to that gives a seal of compliance.Elec.Gas.etc.I added all up and as I said the money was very high then so I could not see the red tape for about $500.and no dealer for work if needed.Just hope this helps John

Matt thanks for the link. Thanks for your info as well John. In 2004 I was on the verge of importing a 5er. All went well till I found out warrenty may be a problem. I have sense bought in Canada.
What I'm looking into now is..how difficult is it to import a new truck? Warranty "should" be covered at any GM dealer, and as long as the vehicle complies to all Canadian Laws(automatic lights on, KM odometer etc.)I wouldn't think there would be a problem. I did try to contact Transport Canada by e-mail (no reply) so I will contact them by phone next week. I'll keep you all posted........Brad.
