Hey Jim...
First of all - Does Cheri know or is this a surprise? (If it's a surprise -I will PM you with my "blackmail demands" )

This is not the campground inside the park - correct? We have not been there if that is the case...BUT I have issues with the Park name - What time do the trains actually run...and are the tracks continuously being used 24 hours a day?

MM
PS -Let me know about my Blackmail - otherwise I will call to tell her at 6 PM on Sunday!!

Good thing theres no rasberry here.

Sorry she knows about it already so there will be no black mail demands if you please. The trains are like me on a work night, I go to bed around 11PM the shut down after the last train around 6:30 PM The Grand Canyon Rail Road is its owen Rail Road only for the Canyon. The other Rail road is off a bit but you can stiil hear the whistles at night. We have stayed at the Circle pines KOA when we had the pop up and I didn't mind the whistles in the distance. This Camp Ground is in Williams right off route 66

She didnt have her phone on, I tried calling to tell her I was done with work at 610 I will be home soon so watch it.

Have fun

We stayed there last fall for a 2 nights. The park itself is very clean, and well manicured. The roads and parking pads are paved with gravel between the sites which are fairly close together. There are no picnic tables, fire rings and etc. The staff was very friendly. A Hotel is adjacent to the campground with a restaurant, gift shops, and etc. There is a kennel where you could board your pets while siteseeing. It's not my idea of a destination park but is a great place to park while you visit the area.

We very much enjoyed the train ride up to the GCNP and back and would do it again.

Oh yeah, the rr tracks that follow I-40 out through that part of the world go right by the campground. We are sound sleepers and sleep with a noise maker on so we didn't notice if a train came by late at night.

Have fun!

Lee

We stayed there two nights in April, and we highly recommend. We loved leaving the driving to someone else for a change and taking the train to the canyon. We took the observation car up and the parlor on the way back -- great to see two different parts of the train. We also added a bus tour of the rim to the trip. Though our time at the canyon was limited, we saw a lot.

Have fun and travel safe,

Natasha

We stayed there on our way back from Texas with the GS-DP. It is as described. You can use the hotel's ammenities such as pool, spa, game rooms, excercise rooms etc. Take in the "old time shootout" at the depot before boarding the train in the morning for the GC.

One word of advice, buy the air conditioned car tickets ($5 more per person) and inform them that you need to be seated in the forward most AC car. The ride is quieter, smoother, cooler and you will thank me for it later as the rest of the cars that are not air conditioned become noisy, sweltering, smelly examples of a train in India or Pakistan.

You can take a free shuttle to some of the South Rim's hot spots and they will get you back for the return trip home on time.

If you are wondering about that crazy clear glass cantilevered walkway/bridge, it is on the North Rim and is on Indian land. It takes a long while on very poorly maintained bumpy roads and costs a lot to get there, can't be accessed with small cars or RVs and costs to go out on plus you can't take cameras, cell phones etc while out on the walkway/skyway.

The rest of the canyon is a great trip. The rail trip has some surprises on the return route and I won't spoil them for you.

I can say that when we went, we saw a mountain lion about 30 yards from the train that was chasing some prey. It was magnificent and VERY BIG!

Enjoy.
