I've enjoyed camping in the Eastern Mojave mountains for many years. Since it became a National Preserve the BLM has made improvements to the roads and facilities.
From I-40 the road is paved up to Hole-in-the-Wall then graded gravel/dirt beyond. The interior roads are typical desert coarse sand. Water is available, but not at each site. There's a nice passage through the rocks and several trails in the area.
Mid-Hills is several miles away and at a higher elevation therefore cooler with lots of Juniper Trees. Some of the sites have great views.
Afton Canyon is outside Barstow off of I-15. It's a nice campground with some colorful folded rock beds. It is also very near the the BNSF main line. If you enjoy multi-engine freight trains every 20 minutes or so you'll love it here.
You should have not problems on the primary roads with your trailer. If it has rained recently there can be some muddy patches in a few places and the secondary roads like Wild Horse Canyon may have had some washouts.
