Red Bluff to Susanville Hwy 36
Is this a reasonable route for a 38' MH and toad in April?

Cal-Trans Road Conditions 1-800-427-ROAD updated every hour or so. They state the update time. Northern California has gotten quite a bit of snow this year. Occasional spring storms in that area.

Last time I needed to go between Red Bluff to Susanville I went up to Redding and took CA44. A little longer but it looked like a better road at the time.

Hwy 36 is a good road, but spring storms can put snow down to 3,000' sometimes (like this weekend!). There are a series of steep (6-8%) grades starting below Shingletown, so be prepared for that. They've widened that area with passing lanes, so its much better now. Between Shingletown and Lassen Park don't miss the Forest Service Interpretative Center at the junction of 89 and 36) (and visit the Loomis Museum at Lassen Volcanic NP just up 89 from the Forest Service Center). More road straightening and widening. When you get to hwy 44 and 36, visit the lava tubes (bring a hat and flashlight).
If you can't tell, we live nearby!!

Thanks for the great advice on this route.
We will likely try 36 next week if the weather is good.
Since we are less than 40+', the Caldot map restrictions do not apply.

Wx today is calling for more rain/snow for next wed-thurs; we'll see how it shapes up.

Maybe I am confused, but Shingletown is accessed by hwy 44 not hwy 36 according to Google Maps.
Is 44 via Redding to 36 the best way to accomplish the route to Reno from Red Bluff when towing?

whoops! My bad. Trouble with 36 is Mineral Summit, just east of Mineral. Just over 5,000' and it does get snow this time of year. 36, like 44 has been improved over the last few years, around Paynes Creek and west of Mineral. There is a short, winding downhill from Mineral Summit to Childs Meadow. If its clear outside, the view up from Childs Meadows to Mt. Lassen is picture perfect, just like a postcard. Now you have the lowdown on 36 and 44! At some point in your travels, and better a little later in the year, is to take Ca hwy 89 from end to end. Spectacular!

OP update.
Since we needed to travel on a rainy day, we used Hwy 80 to get to Reno.
Even that familiar route was a challenge....

Oh, shoot! Today is beautiful! Yesterday pm we had thundershowers (very rare) and pea size hail. I'm sure they had snow on Morgan (not Mineral as I mistakenly said) Summit as it is over 5,700'.
Did you make it thru without chaining up?
