We are considering selling in Northern CA and moving to Arizona or New Mexico. Just starting our search.

We can't deal with snow or big cities. We would like a house in the foothills, elevation 1000 to 2000 feet, maybe pay in the $400K to $600K range.

Any suggestions?

In AZ, you can get a very nice home in the $400-$600k price range. Prices are considerably lower than CA.

The foothill area north of Phoenix/Scottsdale is nice... away from heavy traffic but still close enough to town for conveniences. Some subdivisions, and some large acreage. Also the foothills east of Mesa is a rapidly growing area.

Tucson has some lovely foothills with great views, also.

There are also several small communities that are more rural. Prescott is nice, but the elevation is about 5k.

Try to spend some time in each area to get a feel for the lifestyle. I've lived in either Phoenix, Scottsdale or Tucson most of my life, and each area is distinctly different.

Give us some ideas about your lifestyle, likes, dislikes, cultural interests, eating out preferences, shopping, do you play golf, raise horses, etc.....

Thanks for your reply Judy. We are closing in on 70, live in the NorCal foothills and would like a home without so much to do. We don't play golf, raise horses, things like that.

We LIKE to eat out, garden, shop (at least one of us does). We would just like to laze around and hop in the RV once in a while and go to CA, OR maybe SD to visit relatives.

We did camp at a state park about 10 miles away from Scottsdale last year when we went to see the Giants. Nice community nearby, forget the name, nowever. (It is Fountain Hills and the park is McDowell)

Scooter, have you ever thought about moving to Wickenburg, AZ? Wickenburg is about 50 miles N/W of Phoenix on U.S. 60. Small town....5000 or so residents, about 2000 ft. elevation, no snow, small town living and feel to it....and it's only about a 1 hour liesurely drive at the most to the big city. Sounds like exactly what you are looking for. Here is a link:Wickenburg Chamber of Commerce

Try Cedar City, Utah. Small town with lots to do. Property is inexpensive and living in the high desert you escape the "Vegas" type summer heat and still get a dusting of snow around Xmas tim.

I prefer the higher elevations in AZ for the somewht cooler summers. We are at 2900 feet at my house in Tucsn. Summer temps here are usually 5? cooler than Phoenix. There are several towns in souther AZ in the 4000 - 5000 foot elevations. Of course, then there are all those nice places in the mountains north-east of Phoenix. I don't think snow is much of an issue in AZ at elevations below 5000'. One question to ask yourself, other than altitude, is do you want to live in or around a big city like Phoenix or in a smaller community. That decision will rule out a lot of places.
