In addition to the Milepost which has already been mentioned, I'd also highly recommend these:

Traveler's Guide to Alaskan Camping by Mike & Terri Church
The Great Alaskan Tour Saver (many two-for-one tours...you'll get back the price of the Tour Saver with just one tour)

My sister-in-law lives in North Pole AK. which is a suburb of Fairbanks. We have flown up there 3 times (95', 99' and 03')and are going again this Aug. Just some words of advice. The bugs can be bad in May and June....Last year she said it wasn't bad at all. We like to go in Aug. (no bugs)to pick all the wild berries found everywhere. In the Fairbanks the vistor center is very nice. My sister-n-law lives right across the street from "Santa Clause House" in North Pole AK. Its a gift shop with a year round Santa....They also have a campground. While being close to the highway, the sites near the back of the park were fine. Also in Fairbanks there is a paddleboat tour called River Boat Discovery, while pricy is very informitive. In past trips we have brought our tents and gone to Valdez and Kenai areas. In Valdez city there is a regular campground, but there is also a city owned parking space/ lot across the bay ($5-$10 a day) where you can go fishing across the street. It offered fresh water and out-houses, but nothing else. But you are able to fish just across the street. I drove thru a few state parks and all were very nice.

Jeff and Cheryl, we made the trip to Alaska for the summer of 2006. I found that neither story about the roads being "not that bad" or "the roads from ****" to be true. It was a bit of both. The road conditions change year to year, and sometimes month to month. We found the Alaska Highway to be no worse than some of the roads in the lower 48 except for the last 100 miles to the Alaska border. At that point, the frost heaves were pretty bad, although most are well marked. The roads in Alaska, for the most part, were fine.

I wrote six travelogs for our journey to Alaska. I included road conditions, fuel prices, campgrounds, and lots of photos. The travelog main menu is at:
http://www.roamingamerica.com/travelog/travmenu.html

Scan down the list and you will see the Alaska travelogs. The last one is an epilog that has highlights and the cost of the trip in 2006.

Hope it helps.

We are going as well. I figured leave around the 1st of July, and don't start for home until September 1st. It's my retirement gift to myself. Don't forget need passport now to get through Canada. Also they have strict laws about taking guns along, so need to check on those. What we ought to do is set up our own caravan, I have a schedule worked out, I copied from a link I have here:

http://www.preferredrvvacations.com/Alaska_58_Day_Carav..._Great_Frontier.html

I am going to compare it to my maps and see what I want to delete. We have TT campground membership, so some of the places we will stay are free for us, and some are part of ROD, or RPI, or Passport America(some canadian park in it as well) to keep costs down, as well as stay in layovers for several days to keep fuel costs down as well. I will check back on this post to see who is interested in a caravan.

we will have to keep this thread going until spring.. right now we figured it would cost us about $3,000.00 for fuel in our truck with our lance. there and back, if we pay $6 for diesel.

my folks had asked what if we took their c? which means they are still in . we figure it will cost double.. we get about 14 with our rig and they get anywhere from 5-8 (pulling a car). we don't think we will pull a vehicle.

which brings up another thought. should you have a tow vehicle or is just the rig enough to get you around???

Go Go Go We went in 2007 with a toad and loved it. "We shall return."

If you do go, try and find where this was taken? Hint... you will be in a town with a unique campground
