Im thinking about driveing through and checking out Eugene Oregon. I havent been through there since I was a kid.

My brother says he likes the area and town. Im looking for a place to relocate.

Anyone have anything to say about Eugene and compare it to Boise/Emmett/caldwell Idaho area?

Im wondering if I will like Eugene and change my mind about moveing to the Boise area.

How are houseing prices and the economy and is Eugene very small compared to Boise area?

Eugene and Oregon in general is very nice. I grew up in Oregon...left in 1966 when I was 26 but we go back just about every year.

If you are an outdoors person I can not think of a better state than OR.

Eugene is at the southern end of the Willamette
Valley, big agricultural area. Eugene is home of the University of Oregon. When I lived in OR it was in area about 40 miles north of Eugene.

Oregonians are independent thinking people...in many ways rather interesting mix of liberal/conservative types.

While I have travelled through Idaho I can't say that I really know the state that well and thus I can not give you a good comparison.

One thing to be prepared for is wet weather during the winter. There will be little snow in Eugene but there will be plenty of rain and what we use to call the "Oregon drip", a kind of foggy, heavy mist. Spring is great as the state abounds in both natural and cultivated flowers.

Good luck, Hemi

Has anyone checked out the Brookings, OR area? We are thinking of taking a job out there (Workamping) for the summer. It looks so neat and not far from CA. There is no sales tax in OR which I find neat plus they have a higher minimu wage there.

GSP,

All my family grew up in Eugene and Springfield and after serving 20 years for Uncle Sam I had bought a house in Georgia (my last duty assignment). We found after retirement that to do anything outdoors (except the hot beach area) we had to travel far. So....sold the house and packed it up to Eugene. BEST BEST move ever. Eugene has grown over the years to around 140k and seems a little bigger because it is connected to Springfield (much smaller) but hey 40 miles to the coast, 60 miles to the snow and 100 miles to the high desert. Prices are a little higher but not as high as lets say California. Fishing, hunting and all around outdoors is fantastic. Trout, Salmon, Steelhead are great all year. The Rain issue is not as bad as some say. In Eugene lets say rains much less than Portland or mountain areas. Brookings Oregon is a great area also. Right on the coast and not far from the Ca Redwoods and all points in between. Oregon is by far a best kept secret. Even with some of the "Out there" organizations and ideas of some people.
Take a trip and see what we have to offer

Having been born in Eugene and spending my childhood in the area I would have to agree. The city rocks. Unfortunately I find myself 100 miles to the north. Better resturants and entertainment but larger city "problems" as well. Oregon Rocks!

We just started a workamper job in Brookings and love the job. Unfortunately our welcome has occured during a couple storms which were nasty. I love rain but not when you get drenched in it. BUT - when the sun comes out as it has today, it is wonderful. Feel free to email me if more questions.

Eugene is a college town and very liberal. In fact, Washington County, Multnomah County, Clackamas County and Eugene pretty much control the direction of the state. The balance of the state are conservative and covers a larger area but those four counties have the majority of population.

That aside, the Willamette Valley is beautiful even with the rain. There is the mix of city and country living. When driving through their gas prices are the same or cheaper than Portland. A couple days ago we paid $2.47 for regular. Idaho is more expensive the last time we were that way.

Being a Liberal myself I would love that area. We are looking at a job in the Brookings, OR area for next summer. My son lives in Portland, OR so I could spend time with his family.

We are now in Florida (outside Orlando) and the gas here is in the $2.20 range and has been going down. This was as of last Tuesday and I heard yesterday it went down again. Headed to Daytona so will find out. In the Daytona area it is more expensive as they have a 5 cent a gallon tax for their roads (the county).

Hoping to come out there in May/June and work at an RV park so if you remain in the area we will have to meet. I love rain but not the full blown monsoon types. Hope your job goes good for you. Ours is better now but had some touch times as it sold after we started so there were major changes. We are in FL close to Orlando but at a lake about 35 miles from town.
