Hi all you Northwest guy's

In October this year we are flying in from Denmark and will initially be travelling the Northwest area.

We are thinking about going on highway 101 all the way from Aberdeen in Washington State all the way through Oregon into California.

First of all we are wondering if this road (the 101) is suitable for a 40 foot motorhome and a toad, and secondly we are thinking that the month of October might be very cold along the coastline.

Have any of you any advice that you could share with us please.

The Great Dane

Hi SacsTC

Thank you for your reply.

Wow - 63 Fahrenheit. I will have to remember to bring my shorts. This is like the average summer temperature in Denmark

The Great Dane.

I can speak for 101 north of where SacsTC commented on. It is fine too, including the section that runs north of Aberdeen and around the Olympic Peninsula. Until 1970 I lived in Aberdeen and currently live a couple hours away, just off 101 where it runs along the Hood Canal. We just traveled 101 between Aberdeen and Ilwaco (the Columbia River) a couple of weeks ago with no problems (albeit at 33' and no tow)...

Welcome to the US. I hope you have as great a time here as I did in 1973 when the Coast Guard Cutter I was stationed on went to Aalborg Denmark on a Cadet Cruse. Ihe Danes were great.

We are travelling 101 from Olympia Wa to Phoenix, AZ in late October also. I have travelled this route many times over the years. While it's cooler in Oct, there should not be any problems with the weather, we winter camp the ocean beaches all year round in the NW. Th road is great, just remember its 2 lane and busy through the tourist towns, take your time.

The OR state parks are great, especially along the coast. I have some reviews on my web site http://lotsastuff.tommymartin.info and would recommend Cape Lookout, Beachside, Humburg, and Harris Beach.

In CA, Patrick Point is very popular. Just remember to leave a space open for me, since its first come first served that time of year.

What Sacs did NOT actually say is that Hwy 101/1 gets pretty tight just below Ukiah. You may run into a few tight curves that will cause you problems...especially if you face oncoming traffic.

Thanks to my "Monaco family" for more useful information - we can always relay on you !!

Stanbnv - Denmark has changed a lot since 1973, but it is still worth a visit should you decide to come back. Don't bring your RV - gas and diesel cost $9,3 per gallon

Mopmop - we keep saying that we should try out the fantastic State Parks but it would appear that most places closes around end of September and we can only come to the US after the 1st of October. Maybe we are not trying hard enough?

Thanks

The great Dane

Hi MM

We have in fact made plans that is likely to take us right through Eugene.

21th of October we will be leaving Whalers Rest in South Beach, OR and we will be heading to Coburn and try and do the Monaco factory tour. We will spend the 21st and 22nd in the Coburn/Eugene area. Don't be surprised if the local GM dealer gets invaded by the friendly Vikings.

We (hopefully) won't be needing any repair jobs and wonder if Monaco have any overflow sites that they will let us use. There don't appear to be many camp grounds here - at least not associated with any of the 5 organisations that we are members of. Any tips to a couple of visitors from a now "long time resident" citizen of Oregon ?

On the 23rd we will be heading towards Bend and plan to find a spot near McKenzie Bridge in Willamette National Forrest. The Mc Kenzie Highway 126 looks OK except for where it splits and turns into 242. We will probably stick to 126 all the way.

Always wanted to see a Troll. Maybe the time has come?
