Rita and I were just driving in the rain last week, (60mph gusts,6" of rain in one day)anyhow we went to the Long Beach area to look at some property and up at the north end of the peninsula we came across Oysterville.
Founded in 1854, the town has not grown since, each house is taged with the year it was built, along with the family that originally built it.
Nothing more than a history lesson, no tourist traps or roller coasters but we spent 2 hours walking in the rain and admiring the houses, among there was a church and school, an old canning company and such.
Really a wonderful place to waste a day, if it's dry.

Yup. Driven throught there on a nice day and it is definitely interesting. Lots of history in that whole area, from the Columbia River, North through Grays Harbor.

If you can find it, there's an interesting book called "The Railroad That Ran by the Tides". It chronicles the times on the Long Beach Peninsula before most folks had cars. A narrow-gauge line ran from the north bank of the Columbia River all the way to the north end of the peninsula and it connected with a ferry from Astoria at the south end, Train schedules were "xx minutes after high tide".

The railway actually formed the main streets of the little towns it ran through.. We got interested after a stay in Long Beach where we say big murals on the walls of a restaurant (I think in Oysterville) made from monochrome photographs of the railroad era.

The Peninsula was a major vacation spot for folks from across the river and I think there were recreational service ferries that came down-river from Portland in the summer.

We've always enjoyed Long Beach. Haven't been there in our RV yet; have stayed locally and tent camped. I have a friend who wrote a fiction book about the area; met the locals before writing to research the history. Amazon.com: Just Past Oysterville: Shoalwater Book One (9781595941152): Perry P. Perkins: Books

My first wife and I spent about one weekend a month in Long Beach. Some of that time in Ole's Nook and a bunch on the beach in front of a friends beach house. Bought the best 1 gal jug of wine we could for a couple $$ too!! But that was 40 years or more ago!
