with the fuel prices and wear on a tow vehicle should we tow one to alaska?

if my folks go with us we will be in class c winebage (29'). do we really need that extra vehicle. i would think there would be plenty of rv parking when you go to a site seeing spot..

let me know please.
thanks

We found that traveling in a 23ft Class C it was not necessary to tow. We rented a car in Banff to spend a couple of days going to and from Lake Louise and other points of interest while camping at Lake Louise campground.
Parking and traveling by train in Alaska was not problem. Good parking is available at the trail depot near Portage and the Ferry Terminals at Skagway and Haines.

We lived in Alaska for the last 20 years before selling the house last summer and moving into the motorhome to become full-time RVers.

For most of our time in Alaska, we had a 24' class C and never towed a car. Didn't really need to. At 24' we could easily get around and find parking anywhere we wanted to go. Once in a while it would have been more convenient to have a tow, but it was never that big of a hardship not to have one.

Three years ago, in preparation for our full time RVing dream, we bought a 35' Class A. We used it one summer without a tow and had a tow the second summer. WAY better with the tow. That extra 11' made a big difference in ease of getting around.

Once we actually started living in the MH, we ended up trading up to a 41 footer, but that's another story.

Anyway, I think at 29' you'd probably still be small enough to get away without a tow. Especially if you envision that you'll be moving around from place to place every few days rather than staying in one spot for long periods of time. And if you do stay in one spot for any length of time, you can always rent a car as the previous poster mentioned.

One suggestion to put on your itinerary - Seward. They have a water front camping area run by the city, mostly dry camping but water and sewer dump are available close by and a few spots with elec & water. Most everything is in walking distance. It's not fancy but the scenery out your front window can't be beat.

Good luck and have fun! You'll love it.

Well Jeff and Cheryl what did you finally end up doing?

We went to Alaska in 07 with a toad for 2 mos. and loved it. Alaska is truly the last frontier.

Hope this picture shows up. If it does can you reccognize where it was taken.

Jeff & Cheryl: Are ya still headed to Alaska this year (09)? Most of your posts were back in 08 and haven't seen any more recently. Anyway, we'd really recommend taking a toad along since in quite few locations the freedom to explore and still leave your rig set up is priceless. We spent the summer of 07 up North (Alcan, Whitehorse, Dawson City, Top of the World Hwy., Tok, Fairbanks, Denali, Seward, Homer, Valdez, Haines, Skagway, and Cassier Hwy). IT WAS FABULOUS!! Have a WONDERFUL trip. Steve & Lynette
