We will be traveling from Western Washington/Oregon to Arizona the first of December. Thinking of following Hwy 95 down the West edge of Nevada. Have any of you ever done that? Is it a good road? Is it susceptible to snow or inclimate weather? I guess I am most interested in the road from Reno to Las Vagas?

We take that road quite often and enjoy it... usually not too much traffic, good road surface, waaaaay better than going south on I5 in California. Don't know about weather conditions in the winter. Have fun!

Nevada weather is seldom predictable. We have had a very dry year. Forecast is for possible rain this weekend. The temps are chilly at night but fairly warm during the day. DH and I came back from Vegas on year in late January and hit fog from just North of Beatty to Hawthorne, but most of the time the road is pretty clear. NDOT does a fairly good job of keeping things passable.

Thanks for the responses. Brenda you are correct I was hoping not to go through California. But Sharba I was hoping for something more than just passable. Is the altitude quite High, so that its gets snow often? It is east of the mountains but I guess it is still high and can be quit cold. Is that correct?

There are two high spots on the road between Hawthorne and Vegas. One is Tonopah and the other is Goldfield. They are about 30 miles apart. Both get snow.

We just went over it on Sun and Monday from Reno to Pahrump. Stayed at Tonopah Sunday night at the Ramanda Inn. The road is wonderful and got the best fuel mileage on our rig so far. Put on cruise at 62. It got to 31 degrees at Tonapah on Sun night but now is in a warm spell. The road is very good and a pleasure to drive. The next 7 days or so look like good weather.

Good- Kentr- We have been at Pahrump NV this week and the weather is wonderful. Spent a full day in death Valley. The highest it got was 80 degrees in one spot. Mostly in the 70's. Wonderful day. We are spending next week at the Lake Havusu RV Resort and spending Turkey day there. Our daughter is driving from Scottsdale AZ to be with us. should be fun. From there who knows. Good luck on the weather as it is very unpredictable in those NV valleys and like they say there are two pretty high points. Easy to negotiate but could get cold on the wrong day. Just watch the weather and have a great trip.

I am going from Nortern Arizona to Portland, OR in mid December...I have always gone north on I-5 over the Siskyou's...I guess it will be fine if it isn't snowing...anyone have a better suggestion? Slippin and slidden down the hill into Ashland in the 40' DIP probably wouldn't be much fun

If you take it slow the you can avoid Ashland Summit by going from Reno to Alturas to Klamath Falls then over to Medford and I-5. We have taken that route in winter a couple of times.

Sharba:
Don't you have to go through Susanville on that route??? I went that way years ago, but frankly don't remember (CRS!!) I thought that was pretty mountainous and windy until you get to Alturas???

Actually, US395 heads north about 5 miles east of Susanville, so you don't go through town. However, if you are a Starbucks fan, you will want to make a stop... they are located next to Safeway, on the opposite side of the street from McDonalds. After the Starbucks stop, just go straight across the intersecion, crossing Hwy 36 and follow that road back to US395.

We often use this road as we leave and/or return on trips. Yes, US395 can be windy, but not very often. The windy part is between Reno and Susanville. Watch the weather reports.

It is not what we who live in this area would call "mountainous" as I don't believe the altitude gets over 5000' and Susanville is already at 4,000'.

Enjoy the trip.

Another suggestion....

Rather than cutting across to Medford from Klamath Falls, why not take HWY 97 (at Klamath Falls) all the way to Madras and then take 26 to Government Camp, then 35 to Hood River then catch I84, westbound. The scenery on 97/26/35/I84 roads is outstanding and roads are very good (a very wide two lane), some places 4-lane.

I am getting to really dislike I-5 especially from Eugene to Portland.... very heavy traffic.

HEMI

Yes, that Ashland Summit is to be avoid...esp this time of the year.
