Am planning to spend a week in Yellowstone and a week in Grand Teton Sept '09. Thinking about loinshead RV Park in West Yell and Colter Bay RV Park in Teton. Got a better idea for a full service park? Fishing Bridge reviews say is too 'tight'. Is there construction at West Yellowstone? Can I do Teton and some of Yellowstone from Colter Bay? Thanks for advice.

Hello FlyFish, Colter Bay is a very good spot, even for visiting Yellowstone. We stayed 2X at Colter Bay and did the Yellowstone Park just from Colter Bay, easy Drive to YNP... Next year we will be at Colter Bay again..
Have fun

Not sure why people say that Fishing Bridge is tight. Our motorhome fit fine and there were a couple bigger than us. Reality is you don't spend a lot of time at camp. Every day we were off and exploring the park. Fishing Bridge is great since it is centrally located.

I stayed at the KOA outside of the West entrance - was very nice but if I were to do it again I would stay at Fishing Bridge - the central location is worth any inconvience.

We drove for 4 days straight to see the park and I still think we missed some of the best spots to see the wildlife.

If you are going to stay in West Yellowstone the Grizzly RV Park is the very best around, you won't be sorry. We are going to stay there on the way to the Tetons next week then have reservations at Colter Bay which is also a decent park.

Reservations at Colter Bay? Where did you find the information on that? Everything I pull up says they do not accept reservation for the campground. Maybe I am looking at the wrong place?

Well after two month from the time I asked my question I have discovered on my own that there is an RV park besides the campground the website had list. The only way to access the RV Tab is by clicking on lodging. If you mistake the campground tab to take you to a campground you only get the tent camping with no reservation.

How nice to find out there is an RV Park there with hook ups. …………

If you had asked me that question I would have answered you, not left you hanging.

Explorer2, I apologize for not getting back to you regarding the Colter Bay thing . I was not leaving you hanging because I assumed reservations were pretty much straight forward. My DW makes all the reservations and she never told me about the procedure to get this accomplished. Had I checked back on this thread I would have seen your question and responded with her procedure. Again I apologize for not checking back.

Have you checked the condition of Hwy. 89 between Yellowstone & Jackson? We were there earlier this year and found they were replacing 2-3 bridges (long term projects) and waited 30 min. to an hour at each.
OBTW, we stayed at Fishing Bridge with 40' MH and toad - no problem at all. Been closer and paid more at some KOA's

Thank you for your responds. I was getting frustrated with that situation when I read about people making reservation. I kept going to the website and getting the same answer of first come, no reservation. I stumbled upon it today when I went looking again and spotted RV Park. I called and was able to place us on a waiting list for a reservation when the date we want opens.
We are staying two nights at Coulter Bay then moving on up to Fishing Bridge for two more nights. I agree H. Miller, I would like to stay in the areas we are seeing without at lot of backed up traffic

Take lots of insect repellent for Coulter Bay...the mosquitoes are worse than in the Louisiana swamps.

Please post back what you think about Fishing Bridge. We didn't stay there but driving through in the toad was an experience. We got caught with a 5'er trying to leave and a class a trying to arrive...cost us about 30 minutes waiting for the traffic to sort itself out due to the tight roads, etc. Just curious what your experience will be.

Coulter Bay is nice and roomy.

LOL Elkharkjim..I may be discussing that in person…I think we will be at the same campground over Labor Day weekend with the Texas boomers. We have to go down to Texas to take care of some business and it looks like we might be there.

Flyfish,
We were at Yellowstone the last of July, this year. They are closing the road between Madison and Norris sometime in August, I think. You will probably be better off at Fishing Bridge if you are planning on seeing the park without driving a really long way around the southern loop. Also, the road (US 89) South, out of the park to Grand Teton N.P. has MAJOR road construction for several miles. We wouldn't take our motorhome on that road. When we were there the only way in or out of Yellowstone without major construction was going West, thru Idaho. Check to see how much of the construction is finished before you try any of the roads because all of it was very rough and narrow. Have fun, Yellowstone and Grand Teton NP's are beautiful that time of the year.
