As a note of caution from one with experience, be VERY careful when walking on the ice and snow, in fact stay off it completely (I was being careful). I went down on the way to the garage and now get to use my trusty old crutches to get around for awhile. No, didn't break anything but pulled a lot of stuff in the ankle area and can't put any weight on it, not to mention it doesn't bend well either (or at all). I hate winter!!!

Sprains are usually worse than breaks for both pain and healing. Sure you wanted to hear that. I have made a skate out of my butt on a few occasions, it's no fun. Hope your up and running again, so to speak!

Oh, sorry about your fall. After falling a few years ago and doing a number on my knee, I discovered the contraptions that go over your boots and have spikes in them. They work well on icy spots. There is another version called Yak Tracks that are good too.

Tom, take it easy man!! We went to south Texas on Dec 23 to escape that fate (fell two years ago on the ice, luckily hit my head, it is hard enough only went to emergency room and got some heavy duty pain pills, no other damage, except of course to the pocketbook). In Florida right now and it is cold down here too but not as bad as home. Take it easy and get back on your feet,. Glad to see a post from you, thought you had left the country or something! Take care man. Gene

Hi Gene, good to hear from you, yes, we are still here every now and then. Be sure and enjoy those warmer temps down there for me too. I saw your posts on the HDT forum after the Retama visit, sounded like fun with a great group. I was envious then and now as well. Anywhere that doesn't have ice and snow and temps above freezing look great to me, ah well, maybe next year if we are lucky. At least it did get up to the low 50's today, helped melt some of this mess and let me get out of the house for the first time in awhile.

Be safe, enjoy, and stop back in when you can.

Tom, with this winter, I am still waiting for someone to explain how this "global warming" is working.

It's a very simple answer, Ken. The term is no longer "global warming" ..it is "climate change." This requires less explanation when the data don't support the conclusions. In "climate change", it can be colder in some areas than usual because the damage to the environment is being done elsewhere.

What we have experienced here in Texas this year can be labeled a "downstream effect." Gotta luv it.

Well "global" means the average temperature for the entire planet. It is hard to convince those in Texas there is global warming when you have unusually cold weather. However it's hard to convince people in places like Switzerland that there is no global warming when the glaciers are disappearing and they have no domestic water which they get from the glaciers. From Wikipedia "Global warming is the increase in the average temperature of Earth's near-surface air and oceans since the mid-20th century and its projected continuation. Global surface temperature increased 0.74 ± 0.18 °C (1.33 ± 0.32 °F) between the start and the end of the 20th century."
You can believe it or not but it is what it is.

I grew up in Tekonsha, MI. (yes it's a township/village) which is located roughly center in the lower part of the state about 25 miles north of the Indiana state line (Think I-69 Exit 25)

It's "Hill country" not quite as bad as where I"m parked now but hilly non the less.

We used to have to carry hot water from the house to the barn (Dairy farm) DOWN a hill

yes.. I learned how to walk on ice.. Also how to fall on ice. A skill that has saved me much suffering as knowing how to fall is kind of important.

No, we don't all love it. Before the freeze I had a beautiful back yard with banana trees and lots of tropical plants around my pool. When I came back home after the freeze everything was DEAD. Even some of the plants I put inside the garage had frozen ends on them. I have plants that had survived the entire 16 years I have been in this house that are no longer with me now - and they were covered (too big to move).

There are other ways to protect outdoor plants.. Ask any grove owner.

Yep, with our detached garage, we built a tent in the garage and put a small heater in there with the plants. Didn't loose anything that was in the garage.
