Mohican State Park

We are leaving Friday for a weekend at Mohican State Park. I'm pretty excited since I've heard this is a very nice park.

The boys (15 yrs old) are ready to try out the tube launch in the river. Anything I need to know or keep in mind? I know some of the state parks are pretty big, should we take the car? I always want to take the car, just in case something happens and we need it...Hubby never wants the car because we rarely ever use it.

I'd say, for your first time there, don't bother to take the car. Plenty to do without the car. If you had already been there, I'd say take the car so you can get to the fire tower or to the actual state park where you can park near the covered bridge & walk to Big & Little Lyons Falls, or go to the gorge overlook or to the lodge (see pics in my albums). But for your 1st trip, you'll find enough to do without the car.

There are several hiking trails around the campground. It's been pretty dry lately, so the Clearfork might be a bit low in spots. Take your bicycles though. The campground isn't that big, but it's plenty flat to bike around. It's been a couple years since we were there last, but if you take your bikes out to Rt-3, go left & ride the berm a few hundred yards, you'll come to a paved bike path that will take you all the way to the ball fields in town. You can even bike to McDonalds! You can also get to that paved bike trail from the front parking lot of the campground (at the very entrance on the north side) but it goes up over a mountain bike trail that's too steep & rocky for me. Like I said, it's been a while, but I think the bike trail somehow hooks up or crosses a part of Wally Road & if you take that to Rt 39 & then turn right (headed into downtown, you'll pass a BP station & a Subway) you'll come across a Dari-ette (local version of a Dairy Queen) for a bite to eat or a slushy. Back at the campground, stop by the comissary(also check-in if there isn't anyone manning the entrance shack) across from the pool & have an ice cream cone. Big cones/cheap prices. Oh & the pool is very nice.

Have a great weekend!

Thanks for so much detail!!! Looks like we are going to have to take the car since hubby is going to have to pick me up from work Friday and head straight there. I'd rather take the car than leave it at work.

I'm looking forward to Mohican! I've heard nothing but good about the park!

We will be arriving there next Wed. for 10 days. How was your trip? In order to get a weekend in the summer you have to reserve far ahead.

Can't wait to hit the river....the water will be like bath water....

? In the pool did you notice if they allowed "noodles". While down at Hocking Hills a few weeks ago, there was nothing allowed in the pool except pool balls or diving toys.

OMG we have a GREAT time!!! Didn't like our site much...couldn't do much people watching or meet other campers. We were at site 37, kind of secluded. We did scope out other sites we like though for next year! My boy and his friend had a great time in the river! I love how they don't care if you have an extra tent! The boys loved that.

Oh my, the people at the electric sites above the pool were having a great time! That was partyville!! I wanted to stay with all of them! LOL Tons and tons of people! Seriously looked like parties everywhere....beer pong and all!

YES, you can have noodles in the pool! I didn't see any other floats other than noodles. Water was to cold for me! We have a pool that I keep temp at 86-88, so I think that has spoiled me. LOL

Oh yeah, we already decided what sites we want to stay at next year!

Glad to hear Mohican is still as great as ever!!

When we lived in Mount Vernon, Mohican was about a 1/2 hour motorcycle ride away and had great roads around the fire tower and down to the covered bridge for a motorcycle ride (obeying all park speed limits, of course.... )

Glad you had a great time. It's one of our fav SP's..when we can get in it.

Mark your calendar 6mo out so you'll at least stand a chance on getting the sites you want for the dates you want next year. Mohican is VERY popular in the summer due to the proximity to all the canoeing facilities. As soon as the window opens for summer dates, the sites go fast. & I mean FAST - almost faster than you can blink. My fav site I've gotten only once in 5 times I've made reservations.

Yep, I plan on marking my calendar!!! I plan on "trying" to get in again next year! I'd like to stay more than a weekend, but don't think it will work out.

We have a river front site. We have a few friends coming down Friday for a night or

too. I got my River Rats (innertubs) got my kayak and my noodles. Now I just have to

decide if the pool or the river will be the place to cool off with this batch of 90

degree+ weather

weather....

Neither! Going to the commissary for a supersized ice cream cone - THAT's cooling off.

I got a site fairly easy when I went in September. Of course, school was in and it was a Thursday. Still a good crowd though but not too packed - just right!! The areas around it are great. We had a site by the river and the campground was cool about have a tent next to my camper where a couple of friends stayed.

Anyone know if they charge extra if you have more than 6 people on your site? Or do they even care? Some sites had 3 tents...I'm assuming they had more than 6 people. Do all parks allow more than 1 tent or a camper plus tent...or is it just Mohican? (Yes, Mohican is my first state park to stay at. Not a lot of them have water hookup and if they do it's hard to get a site.)

We are staying at Indian Lake State Park for Labor Day weekend...My sis in law wants to stay on our site in a tent...

Well, at the OH SP's, the rule is maximum of 6 persons & 2 vehicles per site. A vehicle is described as a car, boat, RV. Obviously, by the looks of some sites, that rule isn't enforced very often.

We're at Mohican right now. And yes, there are a bunch of sites where there are more than 6 people and a few sites with 3 - 4 tents. I was also surprised they let cars park partly in the grass. Looks as if you have 2 wheels on your pad, the officer was OK with that. I we had a few friends visit last night, and we just parked the two vehicles next to each other.

Now there are other Ohio State Parks that follow the rules more to the letter of the law. West Branch seems to be one where parking is a pet peave of the park staff. The problem there is, if you are on one of the loops in the back of the park it can be a 10 -15 minute walk to the extra parking lot located before the check-in station.

A few weeks back we were at Stonelick State Park near Cincinnati, and there again there were many many people & cars per site.

All I have to say is I'm glad I'm here this week instead of at work where I know it would be a sauna with this heat. Start off with a float down the river, then hit the pool mid day. and back in the river later (5-6ish) for another float down the river.
