Woodburner had talked about checking out Mt. Gilead State Park come this Sept or Oct. Mt. Gilead is located between Mansfield and Columbus. Were planning on going out this coming weekend and was leaning toward Mt. G. Has anyone stayed there??? The pictures I posted were from about 3-4 years ago on a "drive thru". Do they have a showerhouse?

Jim:

I looked at the campground map on the Ohio State Parks website. It appears that they only have pit toilets and no showers. Here's a link to the campground map.

http://www.dnr.state.oh.us/Portals/2...eadcampmap.pdf

Below are the campground amenities they list:

- 20/30/50 AMP ELECTRIC:
- FIRE RING:
- PICNIC TABLE:
- VOLLEYBALL COURT:
- HORSESHOE PITS:
- PLAYGROUND:
- FISHING:
- HIKING TRAILS:
- DUMP STATION:
- DRINKING WATER:
- PIT LATRINES:

I guess, take extra deodorant with you.

It's been longer for us than you since we've been there, but still only pit toilets & no showerhouse, Jim. The one pro about the CG is it's so small & not well known (except to locals), it's never full.

If you're in the mood for some ice cream or slushies, head into town & go north on 42/61, on the left in a few hundred yards will be a red building called the Grill & Chill. Basically a local DQ (burgers/hot dogs/fries...etc, too). There really isn't much in town (pizza, chinese take-out) for eats.

That explains why there is only one reservation for this coming weekend. As long as I know there are only pit's and no showers going in, I'll just make sure the water tank is topped off. In my drive thru 3-4 years ago, the sites were real nice. A good deal were double wide / level on a fine gravel pad. Mt. G pix I'm watching the weather forecast and may head out Thursday because Robert has off school Friday. Anyone hear from woodburner (John) lately? He was talking about trying this park out this fall....

We were up that way mid August. We parked the car and walked through the camping area. It was small but nice. We found a couple trails and drove down to the lake. Very quiet area!
We stayed at Dogwood Valley Campground in Mt. Gilead. It's about 5-10 minutes away. We were there for 5 days and loved it. My 2 kids (ages 14 and 17) had a great time.

Come on down, Jim! Fri through Sun will be absolutely gorgeous in central OH: sunny & dry, temps forecasted in the mid-upper 70's day w/mid 50's at night. That's the best camping weather you could ask for. Rain is forecasted for Thurs, but I'm not holding my breath for it. We've been supposed to get rain the last several times the weatherman said it would be coming, but the air is so dry here, the rain fizzles out or there's a short-lived shower that puts down less than a 10th of an inch & then it's gone.

I haven't seen John on the Forums hardly at all. Maybe he's reading, just not posting. Hopefully he'll see this & let us know what he's been up to this summer.

ANNOUNCEMENTS The algae bloom has cleared • The lake is now safe for all water recreation • Click here for current advisory levels for state owned bodies of water (posted 9/9/2010)
This was posted on Mt. Gilead website. Because of the threat of high winds and severe thunderstorms Thursday, we are going to leave Friday morning for Mt. Gilead. Like Lori said in a earlier post, they have forecaster a number of thunderstorms for Ohio this summer, but they fizzled out....

Yeah, but a few of those thunderstorms that did materialize have been real doozies. When we were at Barkcamp in August, we saw a lot of devastation and damage in the area from severe storms that passed through a few days before we arrived.

Tonight's local weather forecast upped the % chance of storms Thursday afternoon to 80% (was 60% at the noon news). They are talking possibility of high winds. We don't need that, just the rain. Should all be gone by about 5-6PM so things should be well dried out by the time you get in on Fri. Now they're saying a possibility of a shower Sunday afternoon (30%) - that wasn't reported on the noon news.

Gotta love Ohio weather! NOT! Hope any rain just skips right over you! I sure do wish I was camping this weekend instead of working!!

When we took those pics, it had been extremely hot (90+ temps) with very little rain if any. People fish in the lake but that's about it, so not much circulation either. Take the algae away and it's beautiful!! LOL

Yes, we have high winds forecasted also up here in the Cleveland area. If I store the trailer at home it is parked in front of the garage, but under a large maple tree. I hitched it up last night and moved it closer to the house. Back about 4-5 years ago in a big wind storm an 8" dia. tree limb fell right where the trailer would have been parked. The way it came down stub first would have gone right thru the roof.....I'll play it safe......I like my RV.....she has served us well.....
