The following is an editorial written by Ken Wilson (TxIceMan) and published in the 1960 SUN (Houston, Texas) on July 25, 2007 in response to an article published in the same newspaper on July 18th. Ken's editorial is reprinted VERBATIM as follows:

"RV RESORT NEEDED IN NORTHWEST HOUSTON

It was with great dismay that I read the article "Trailer Park nixed near Black Horse Ranch" in the July 18, 2007 edition. People have an immediate fear of RV or mobile home parks. People that choose to live in these locations are immediately labeled as "trailer trash".

Northwest Houston is in dire need of an RV Resort campground. If people would look around them, they would see a large number of retired people selling their big houses and going to an RV for their retirement years.

Many of these RV's cost $500,000 to well over $1 million, which is more than many of the homes in the surrounding areas. These people hardly qualify as "trailer trash".

We have lived in our RV for an extended period time on two occasions while we were in transition between homes. The people we have met are very interesting and give no trouble to anyone. Some of the people have mobile jobs which will require them to move to another location fairly often. These residents work and go to church just like people down the street from you.

The park is only as good as the management. If they have a good set of rules and enforce the rules, the RV Parks are very nice. By the same token, we have stayed overnight in a few places we could not leave soon enough the next day.

In our travels, we have made many lifelong friends and we keep in touch with them on a regular basis. An RV Resort is different from a "trailer park". Many have rules that restrict the type and age of the RV and are as restrictive as many of the homeowner associations controlled subdivisions.

I just hope that Mr. Mandell will rethink the RV resort and not succumb to the comments of a few uninformed and fearful people."

The article that precipitated my response was about a long time property owner in the are that was looking at putting in a mobile home and RV campground on his property that was adjacent to an area in NW Houston called Black Horse Ranch. He had some rather harsh responses from local property owners about his plan and was going to abandon his idea. Instead he will probably wind up selling the property to a developer that will put in apartments or a truck stop. The developer will not be so willing to give in as was the current owner.

I felt like something had to be said in defense of the RVers. All too many of the people in these so called "exclusive" areas feel that an RV immediately means trashy people.

I encourage anyone that sees a similar type incident happening, please speak up.

Ken

Well written Ken.

What the folks living in that area do not realize now is they may have . If the developer puts some "Low income Apartments" or a not so nice truck stop they will have a LOT more problems.

There are a LOT of things the developer can do to really make their life miserable.

Too bad the neighbors were not given a tour of Rayford Crossing. (If they would even go if invited) They would find out just how much a park in the area could ADD to their neighborhood.

That is a great article. I have tried for years to get the 1960 Sun delivered to my subdivision but they won't do it. I will try to find a copy at the Chamber of Commerce office. I pass by Black Horse Ranch when I work on Fry Rd. and it is a new upscale area. I would visit a nice RV park if they built one there.
