Hello boomers. I would like to know if the area west of Brownsville TX (Mission and such) is a nice area to retire to? We are thinking of buying into one of the RV parks in the area. Your input would be much appreciated.

Hi Steve -

We don't have anyone who's retired down there YET, but last year Rusty and I met a couple at Fredericksburg who actually live in up north (like Minnesota) or such that have a retirement place in one of the RV Parks. I'll dig out their email address and see if I can get ahold of them. That entire area is called THE VALLEY and there are lots of retirees who live there.

I'll do some checking for you!
Sandy

Be glad to have ya'll become "winter Texans". I don't know about the type places you are asking about, but there are lots of good places in "The Valley" area.

I'd suggest a visit and then do your shopping. I personally like the area around Rockport and Corpus Christi better, but that is my choice.

You will need to buy a pickup truck prior to crossing the Texas border. You can wait 'till after you get here to get the gun rack for the rear window.
I can help you locate a belt buckel the size of a hubcap (actually I think some of them are made from hubcaps).
Oh yah almost forgot....it's starting to become fashionable among some MH owners to have longhorn steer horns mounted on the front of their MH.

We went down there for a week last year... liked it enough to go back for at least a month this year.. Prices and the people were the main reason we're going back to South Padre instead of going back to Mexico Beach Florida.

Steve,
If your route South will take you through Louisianna, you might contact Don Fauntelroy of Innovative RV (Don (W5IT) on this forum). I may be incorrect but I think they do long/short term motorhome rentals that might suit you need.

JestMe:

Our other Boomer friends, Ted and Donna Rogers, had us meet them in The Valley last March for a week. We stayed at Bentsen Palms Village RV Resort in Mission, TX. It was beautiful. We have reservations to go back for 2 weeks on March 1st, '07 but we're going to have to cancel because we're building a house and it won't be finished by them.

Anyway, most of the RV retirees leave by mid-March because it gets so hot. It was still "winter" in Houston but was in the high 90's and low 100's March 3-10, '06!!

We did look at some of the houses in retirement communities while we were there. VERY affordable and nice. Last March the per square foot building cost was an average of $48 !! The salesperson told us that most of their buyers were coming from Florida...

Hope this helps somewhat. Just remember, it gets REALLY hot down there (I grew up in San Antonio, TX), but it's beautiful and has some delicious veggies and fruit!!

Jim and LeAnne have cancelled their March trip to Bentsen Palms in Mission but we haven't. Anyone interested in joining us March 1-15 just let us know before the Rigsbys give up their spot. It does get VERY HOT down there by mid-March In '05 it hit 104, not quite that bad in '06. We'll see what '07 brings.

WOW that is hot for March, I've seen that the average summer temp is 94 in summer ???? I have contacted an outfit called Martins Ranchs they have several developments down there and seem to do a top shelf job at it. We want to buy a lot, not rent. It seems a double lot with utilities costs about $18k

It seems to me that the houses we looked at were in Edinburgh, TX which was north of the valley out 281. Can't be positive though. The houses were very nice and affordable. I can't remember the developments name though. I don't buy that 94 in summer. It's hotter than that in Houston!
