Hi all! Haven't gien an update lately on the move. Lisa and the kids are still at Alamo Fiesta and loving being in Texas. I am still here in cold PA . I just found out the company that bought the publishing company I work for has a division in Dallas. Talking with human resources about oppotunities there and was hoping to get some insight from the locals about communities to research in the Dallas area. I know the zip code of the location is 75231. We are looking for areas with excellent schools, very family friendly, within a 45 min drive to work, and avg home prices about $250,000 or rental of $1,400. Also looking for some information on recreation. We love the outdoors. We spend a lot of time camping, and when not camping, we are bike riding, hiking, and love to just visit state parks and the such. I appreciate everyone's help so far and am really trying to get there as quickly as possible to meet everyone in person.

Hi Rick -
It sounds as though things are moving along ...hopefully you'll be SOMEWHERE in Texas soon.
I'm not as familiar with the Dallas/Ft Worth area at all, so I'll depend on some others who are nearer to that location to jump in and help.
This particlar area of the state meets all the criteria you've shared...just need to zero in on a good suburb in that zip code area!
Sandy

Rick, you need to consider your commute from where ever you live as the traffic in DFW is as bad as most large cities. Out in the 'burbs wher life is pleasnat, you will have longer commutes unless you happen to get a job located in one of the 'burb areas.
Do you know what area the office will be located?

As I am not familiar at all with Dallas I do not know what area it is in. I know the address is 10000 North Central Expressway, Suite 1315
Dallas, TX 75231. One area I have looked at is Rockwall which according to mapquest is only about 25 miles away. I am also starting to look at the Lake Dallas area. I would like to be close to the water as that is one of the things the wife and I really miss. As for big city traffic, I was born and raised in Baltimore, and lived in Miami for a while, so that does not bother me. I am actually looking forward to being back in civilization. If the job thing doesn't pan out in Dallas, then we will be back to the original plan and be in Boerne. I will just have to find a job there, and hopefully in the next couple months the economy and job market will stabalize a little

Rick -
I am familiar with Rockwall and it is a VERY nice area out in that direction. It's a suburb east of Dallas - a good ways from downtown though. I definitely think you could meet all your criteria there in that area.
Sandy
PS: Dallas, Houston, Rockwall, Baltimore, Miami....even Boerne just out of San Antonio...all have traffic! It's a fact of life if you live anywhere near "big town"!!!

hello! My husband took a transfer to Dallas back in 2000. We rented an apartment first and went home week ends, harker heights tx. while looking over the Dallas area. We bought south of Dallas. Ellis county is about 15 miles south of Dallas down town. there are new homes , old homes what ever your pocket book desires with LESS OUTPUT as North of Dallas. School systems are great. churches, lakes, trails. and only a stone throws away from the big city which have buses running (park and ride). We have relatives in Grapevine, friends in Wylie. both are much more expensive for home buyers. Same with Rockwall.or Frisco. commute is long and prices sky high for the average management person you would be talking $400,000 or to a million and not getting any nicer home.. take a look at the stats and see which you prefer.

Looking on Realtor.com, seems like we will be a ble to get more bang for the buck in Rockwall than Boerne. I can tell you this, we will be able to get much more house for our money than we could here. Some of the home I have looked at would be twice the money here. That really suprised me for a major city suburb.

The area that you are looking to work in is the North Dallas Park cities area. Just south of Plano and Richardson. Mostly commercial with some residential high end apartments and such. Not a bad area, but congested. Rockwall is a very good city to live in, it is also getting congested, but not as bad as North Dallas. You could also look in the Allen area for a place to live. The commute would probably be about the same as Rockwall. Hope this helps.

Rick,
The best way to find out about a particular area is to contact a realtor. I know of a good in the Dallas area. She is my wife's youngest daughter. email me and I will give you her email address. jdoc@crcom.net

I would recommend the city of McKinney, about a 30 min. commute N. of your new office. We lived there for the past 11 yrs. Great family friendy area. You can call me at 817-791-1906 if you need some assistance. ,Jim

Thank you everyone for your input. HR at work got back to me today and there are no finance positions at our Dallas locations. So we are back to the original plan in Boerne. Not the worst thing in the world since Lisa loves it there anyway.

Not to hurt anyones feeling in the DFW (Yankee part of the state) area, but I much prefer the San Antonio area over DFW. So I think you are doing fine.
