Hi, as many of you probably remember, we moved here to the wonderful state of Texas last year. Since we still have our home in PA we have been keeping our vehicles registered and insured in PA, but now it is time to complete the transformation to Texans. We are a little sticker shocked at RV insurance rates we are being quoted though. We have received quotes for RV insurance here in Texas anywhere from $400 - $600 every 6 months. This seems outrageous. This is more than the coverage on the truck to pull the trailer. In PA we were paying $77 every 6 mos on our 5th wheel with Nationwide. Can you tell me if this seems reasonable for a fifth wheel, and if so why is RV insurance so high in Texas. Also any and all suggestions are appreciated on insurance companies to check rates with. Thanks!

Rick, some of the companies think an RV is a license to steal. I have found the best rates by shopping around and going to an independent agent. Our trailer is an add on to the auto policy and is not much money compared to State Farm and Gieco wanted. We are about $125.00 for the year additional for the trailer.

Our agent placed the autos and trailer through Hartford.

Rick -

Rusty and I faced the same situation when we moved back to our beloved home state from our 22 year tenure in Ohio - so we know exactly what you mean about sticker shock

Your city of residence now has a lot to do with the insurance rates in the state of Texas. We live in Harris County which has the highest rates in all of the state! Followed by San Antonio are and other major cities.

Shop around for the best quote...we have our rig insured with the house and other vehicles so we have some discount for multiple policies.

The old Texas addage...everything's bigger in Texas? You pay for it too!

I had no idea that costs were so different here in God's country! I'm with Progressive - have been for years - and pay over $1K per year for my MH. I guess that one of the differences, besides where you live in the state, is between a MH and 5er or trailer. Guess I'll have to check out some other places to insure.

I just called Safeco for a quote on my MH so I could compare with what I currently have. They quoted me a price which is almost $200 less than I currently pay, but it's still almost $600 per year. I've been with Progressive for a long time, so for now, I'll stay with them. Still, it was an interesting exercise.

We are with Good Sam and my understanding is it depends on what you're buying. You can get Replacement Value insurance the first 5 years. Wreck yours and you get a brand new one no matter the cost. After 5 years you can insure it for purchase price. What we paid five years ago won't buy much on the new market now but a BBV would be way below that. Also, you can insure personal property inside the rig at an additional cost. You can also choose your deductible. Don't compare apples and oranges while you're looking around. Having house, car and RV with one company usually gets you some discounts on all the premiums.

I find it hard to believe the insurance on a trailer could be that much, in Texas or anywhere. With no vehicle liability insurance, it should be more like $100-$300 year, depending on coverages. Did you get an itemized list of just what coverage you got for that price? Collision. one hopes, and comprehensive too, maybe campsite liability, maybe towing, maybe a large personal property & goods coverage, and ???

I'd keep looking around. Your auto insurer is often the best bet - just ask fr a rider on your auto policy.

We have all of or Insurance with the same company and agent. Our T/T insurance is 411.00 for a year with a 250 ded for collision and no ded for anything other than collision, it also includes all contents in the trailer. It has full replacement for the first 5 years and then for the actual purchase price.

We have Geico. Only have the Champion Bass Boat and the 5th wheel on one policy. Full replacement for 5 years on the RV. Insured for 92K, and it is $750/yr. I checked around, A LOT, and found this to be the best deal. Our 97 Carrilite was insured for $15K and was $230/yr, but that was 4 years ago and didn't have the total replacement value etc.

I don't see how one can compare costs here. How much is each RV worth? Full timer coverage or vacation? Contents? Lotsa variation that effect the price.

Bruce and Jenna, you are correct. coverage and requirements will vary widely, depending on how you use the RV and the type of RV you have. When we were living in our 5er for a year, the rates were higher, but not a lot.

A motorhome will be more than a trailer since it is a totally different category.

The best thing to do is to shop for all of your insurance and you may have to change every once in awhile. I have had the best rates from the independent agents since they can look fro the best policy and rate and are not tied to the only policy their company sells.

It is your money and you are more interested in keeping as much of it as you can. The agents want to get as much of it as they can.

Agreed that rates vary by location (zip code), coverage, and value of the insured RV. I have full replacement coverage thru RV America underwritten by Progressive. About $600/annum which includes vacation interruption, valuables, road service, and such. Yep, rates are high here in Texas. No fun, but it is what it is.

Incidentally, in my case, Progressive beat out all the others including Geico.
