Usually don't have to ask someone to tell me where to go ................ But looking for an idea for this coming weekend within 250mi or so of Houston. We're new (coming back after a 20 year hiatus)and still checking out the new 5r. Something quite, EZ-in &out. Cool would be nice, but I don't think its gonna happen.

If you are looking for an upscale place with a swimming pool, hot tub, easy pull thru access then I would suggest Rayford Crossing RV Resort at Rayford, TX.

If you are looking for a woodsy setting out in the country with a small lake then I would suggest
Country Place RV Park, Cut N Shoot, TX

Thanks for the suggestions. Country Place sounds more like what we're looking for. I'll check out their website and see what momma thinks

jwomack -

welcome to irv2, welcome to the Texas Boomers section and welcome back home to Texas!

I see you're out of Katy which gives you a lot of potentials for a great place to take the rv out for a weekend. Depends on what kind of "feel" that you're looking for.

Give me an idea and I'll get you some names south of metro Houston area and more to the west.

Hill Country RV Resort in New Braunfels is a great place and you're in a good area for day trips all around

AlamoFiesta might be a little further - it's in Boerne which is west of San Antonio.

Lake Medina RV Resort is a neat rustic place west of San Antonio right on the lake - awesome place!

Need more referrals? Let me know if you want bay, water, trees???? There's a number of wonderful State Parks not too far from you!!!

I must apologize for a slightly misconstued statement on my part. We are new to RVing having been away from Rving for 20 years (had a class C in the late '80's). We are life-long Texans except for 5 years in NM in the early 90's and 4 years at Vandenberg AFB, CA '67 - '71. We did just move to the Katy area 5 years ago from Salado.
Just got our Montana 5r in July and did a shakedown run to Columbus 1000 Trails and another to Medina Lake. I'm looking to retire around the end of the year and go to longer trips and stays altough not full timing. We generally like quite, adult oriented sites. I golf and fish (mostly bays) so these are desirable near-by activities. DW wants to start doing some of the towing, so easy access, low traffic four-lane routes would be helpful.
As to the TX Boomers, I've visited your site and it sounds like you are a good-timing bunch (I like my palm trees and flamingoes). We'll probably try to join you at your Oct or Nov rally depending on my work schedule. Do we need to do anything other than RVSP and show-up? And what is a Garbage Can Dinner? Not familiar with that one.
Sorry for rambling so long, but its early and its looking like a sloooow day today. I'll be checking in and out.

Thanks
jw

Welcome to iRV2 Jimmy and Tresa.

Here ya go...

GARBAGE CAN DINNER

This has been a favorite of the Texas Boomers during the "fall season"
for many years

RECIPE FOR 25 PEOPLE

the amounts of each ingredient listed below is calculated for 25 people.
You can adjust as needed for a larger or smaller group

EQUIPMENT
1 or more large “turkey fryer” pots with baskets – The garbage can dinner can be done on a stove, propane burner or open campfire. If you use open campfire (with grate) method, spray the entire outside of the turkey fryer with PAM if you cook over an open campfire. The outside will turn black and the Pam makes it a lot easier to clean off!

INGREDIENTS

Put 2 inches of water in the bottom of the turkey fryer - that's all -just TWO INCHES of water! Then put the basket in the pot.

Layer the following ingredients in the order below starting with the cabbage on the bottom, carrots on the top

4 - 5 heads of fresh cabbage - cut into quarters. Cabbage (believe it or not) takes longer to cook than anything else so it has to go on the bottom.

1 10-12 lb ham - Do not use a precooked ham because it will turn out dry and stringy. Buy a big ham and cook it about 1/2 way at home, cut it up and put into the garbage can dinner and it will continue to cook during the process.

4-5 lbs fresh green beans - snapped

5 lbs onions - peeled and quartered

4 - 5 rings of sausage - you can use any brand of cooked ringed sausage. Uncooked sausage will not get done during the heating process.

6-8 lbs potatoes - peeled and quartered

3 -4 lbs carrots - large packages of baby carrots already peeled are great!

* 1 ear of fresh corn on the cob per person - see note below when to add this last ingredient!

COOKING TIME

Your pot(s) should be full to the top with all these ingredients. Put the lid on it and place on the grate over the open campfire for ONE HOUR. As the ingredients are steamed they will shrink down.

* After one hour of steaming, take the lid off and place 1 ear of fresh (not frozen) corn on the cob, put the lid back on the pot and steam for 20 more minutes.

SERVING

Drain all the liquid out of the pot as you pull the basket out - line your tables with butcher paper and toss the ingredients on the table..........or you can put the dinner into serving bowls and have everyone go through the line and spoon out their dinner! Add butter, salt and pepper and enjoy!!!

Thanks to all for your welcoming responses. We're going to try Country Place RV this weekend - hope to just unwind after today (and probably tomorrow) going south on me.

Welcome to iRV2. If you don;t have a great time with the Texas Boomers, it's you own fault. Hope you can make it to a rally.

Just got back from a long weekend there. Really did enjoy the peaceful and very quite setting. Sign us up for November. Do I need to do anything other than RSVP on the calender site?

Jimmy,

Glad you and Tresa enjoyed Country Place. i was waiting for Mike to respond to your post about signing up for the Nov campout but I am sure he is busy. If you signed up on the irv2 calendar for the campout, that's all you need to do. Just come on to the park on that date and you'll meet some of the best RVers in Texas. Pat and I will be there and look forward to meeting you both.
