Some of you with a personalized avatars, please help out those of us with dialup service. Your photo should be no bigger than about 100x65. Anything larger (like 1280x960, for instance) takes a long time to download, particularly if it's there more than one time on a page. You can find out how big the avatar is by right clicking on the picture and then clicking on properties.
As I get older, if I wait to long for a page to appear, I forget why I was looking for it in the first place. And don't tell me to get broadband, I'm too cheap.

Dave
You bring up a good point--I never knew that the picture's size did that--I am going in and changing mine now.
I went to change and saw where mine is not large.
Thanks Robin

Dave:
Give it up and buy BROADBAND!
It's no more than the cost of one of those JUMBO hamburgers at Fuddruckers!

Check the 'byte' size too, it's just above the pixel size. In the Administration forum there's a thread running attempting to find a resolution to this issue and we've discovered the Avatars 'byte' size is a concern too.
Robin, yours was 257,365 bytes, I changed it last night. It's now 1,924.
Actually, if we would all use the photo album's Avatar section to upload the pictures used as Avatars, our problem would go away. The software for a thumbnail Avatar sizes it appropriately for our purpose. We're trying to find a way to systemically require all of them to be sized appropriately, the jury is still out.
Some of the problem is when we use an URL outside of that provided by Infopop for an Avatar such as I had to a Nu-Wa promotional website for my 5th wheel Avatar. To my embarrassment, mine was too big too at 21,378. I fixed it last night too by copying the picture from the URL onto my hard drive in "My Pictures" file and then taking that and uploading into the Photo Album's Avatar section..

RICHARD THANKS FOR FIXING THE AVITAR BUT I WENT AHEAD AND JUST DELETED IT. I HATE TO THINK THAT PEOPLE HAVE TO SIT AND WAIT FOR A PICTURE TO COME UP--I KNOW I HAVE BETTER THINGS TO DO!! IF IT IS A PROBLEM THROUGHOUT THE FORUM, WHY DON'T WE JUST GET RID OF THEM?
ALSO, I HEARD YOU ALL WERE SELLING YOUR HOME UP THERE. WHERE ARE YOU GUYS MOVING TO?
ROBIN

Hi Robin,
You wouldn't have needed to delete it now that I resized it, yours no longer was part of our problem. If you'd like to put it back, feel free to do so.
On a thread running in Administration that's''s accessible to only moderators and administrators, a discussion is ongoing regarding how the Avatars are affecting the site and those who use a dial-up connection. We don't feel getting rid of the Avatars altogether is an appropriate solution, many members enjoy having them and we've had them without problems for years.
Only recently, in the past couple months, have they become an issue and that has been since Infopop did some sort of upgrade. Bill is currently working with Infopop to determine what they did to cause this concern.
Regarding selling our home, that's the first I heard about it. Are you buying?

Robin, by all means put yours back up. As Richard said, it was a problem that appeared suddenly and I think they may have a soluton for the problem. Yours had been resized to meet the system requirements and no one was having problems until INFOPOP did something. Anyway, put it back up, we do not want to do away with the Avitars.

Thanks guys, I will get her to put it back online.
Hope you all can get the issues resolved, the avatars are a nice touch.
Richard, I have no idea where she heard you were selling up in the mountains, but I will ask her when she gets home. You know these Realtors they always seem to be the first to know.
