We will be leaving for south Texas next week and are wondering about driving conditions via I-20. Last year we took I-10 but after the hurricanes know we need to avoid the southern-most route.

We have been that way several times. The only part of the trip I don't like is Atlanta, GA. but it depends on the time of day you are going thru. It is just too much traffic. I have been wanting to post a thread about which is better 220 or I20 and what time of day to take what. We are going that way the middle of January.

Unfortunately my 'part time' retirement job takes me that way several times per month.
From Columbia to Augusta is not really bad except for a few spots. SC highway patrol likes to hang out in the median trees about 30 miles east of Augusta.
From Augusta to Atlanta is just fine, albeit boring ride. There is some bridge (overpass) construction just east of I-285 but after you get inside I-285 the road is fine all the way until near the Alabama line. Gets a little rough there and then it is a pure b**** outside of Birmingham (heading east into the city) for several miles of rub board rough and construction. I-20 thru B'ham is rough as a cob, so take the by-pass. From B'ham to Tuscaloosa is a good ride. West of that? can't help much, haven't been that way for a couple of years

Atlanta: make your plans to travel straight through w/o hitting the I-285 'by-pass'. That thing is a pain almost any time of day. If you pass through Atlanta after 9-10 AM and before 3 PM you will have no problems. Any time after about 7 PM is fine coming in but you will have a bit of westbound traffic as you leave around Fulton Indsutrial exit.

Before you get into Birmingham, take 459 toward Tuscaloosa. I-20 through Birmingham is terrible.
459 runs back into I-20 West of Birmingham.

If you like football, you might want to stop in Tuscaloosa and visit the Bear Bryant museum, Roll Tide.

Be safe in your travels and have a great 2006.
