For those folks coming to the 10th Anniversary Reunion Rally, you are going to want to come and see what Myrtle Beach is so proud of.

Just completed just before the Memorial Day weekend the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk is now open to the public. On those days this mall area was almost shoulder to shoulder! Entertainment stands were put up and there was a BIG party!

This is a view of the boardwalk behind a number of beach vendors where you can just turn into the stores from the boardwalk and be in any number of establishments including, Myrtle Beach's keystone establishment the "Gay Dolphin".

Description:

The 1.2 mile-long Myrtle Beach Oceanfront Boardwalk and Promenade traverses through the sand from the 14th Avenue to 2nd Avenue Piers in Myrtle Beach. The boardwalk provides oceanfront views of the pristine beachline, numerous shops and restaurants along its path, and is divided into three different sections.
  • The northernmost portion winds down from the 14th Avenue North Pier to Plyler Park.
  • The mid-section is located from Plyler Park to the former Pavilion Amusement Park site at 8th Avenue North and encompasses more of a carnival-like atmosphere with oceanfront dining and businesses.
  • The southernmost end of the boardwalk leading up to the 2nd Avenue pier has a meandering oceanfront park.
Interesting facts: The Myrtle Beach Boardwalk took nine months to build, cost close to $7 million and is made up of nearly 800,000 feet of lumber. Builders used about 300,000 nails, 555,000 screws and 10,000 bolts to complete the project!

This is the view looking South toward the 2nd Avenue Pier. The boardwalk continues from this point for about 1/4 of a mile and then joins a winding cement walkway which continues on for about another 1/3 of a mile.

The concrete walkway winds through tropical vegetation once mature. There are seats every hundred feet it would seem if you need to take a break. It is expected that the existing hotels on the beach will tie into the boardwalk however most of those access walks have not been finished.

At approximately every tenth of a mile you come across a pedestrian access walk and stairs to the beach. The triangle panels provide a cool shade in the heat of summer where you can have a seat and just check out what's going on and do some people watching.

Off to the North toward the 16th Avenue Pier the boardwalk is finished in Trex decking. Some folks have complained that the walk is not wide enough but it's not all that bad. Again benches are set into cubbys along the way so you can take a break if you like and just watch the beach.

Just this past week they opened a 3rd on the beach restaurant.

I live in PA. Visit Myrtle in the spring with a golf group, and this next trip is with family. Sorry I won't be able to attend, but sounds like fun.

Tom, A lot of folks might just grab a chair and sit and would never know that it was there. It's something to do once you get here.

Geojudi59, Ok here is the right answer although you may not chose to do this.

"YES" you can walk from OL to the 2nd Avenue pier and onto the Boardwalk via the beach. The beaches here are without borders for miles however it's about 6.6 miles. The Boardwalk is an additional 1.2 miles to its end at the 14th avenue pier.

Might be better if you took the car and parked parallel to Ocean Blvd one block to the west close to one or the other entries. The 14th avenue pier's restaurant was highly rated for its cheeseburgers and they have an outdoor seating area on the pier.

Hi All,

Here are two ideas on walking the board walk, just my 2 cents worth!!

1) Depending on how many folks want to do it, drop a car or three off at 2nd Ave pier then drive up to 14th Ave pier have a cheeseburger lunch then walk down the 1.2 miles to 2nd Ave. Then drive back and pick up cars at 14th Ave!

2) Have someone who does not want to do the board walk drope folks off at 14th Ave pier, still have the cheeseburger lunch and walk back the 7.8 miles to OL!!

Hi All,

Well from they way the reviews go, it does not seem like something the local folks want! Only time will tell!!
