It looks like we are finally beginning to make plans for some summer travel. Due to personal desires I am looking to buy a tow dolly from a place in Calvin, Pa. Almost in the center of the state. We are now thinking about spending the month of July messing around in Pa. What suggestions do the folks on here have about what kind of places we should visit? We kind of know to go to the Lancaster and Dutch Country area. What else is great? We don't really need to go into Philly or Pitts. but would for the right kind of attractions/events or activities. We would like to get a good cross section of what the various parts of the state offer. What do y'all recommend for someone from south of the Mason-Dixon Line.

If you get to the Scranton area Steamtown is a great railroad museum and is the old roundhouse of the Erie Lackawanna RR. In the Scranton-Wilkes Barre area there is also a museum dedicated to coal mining which is what made this area infamous. If you are into NASCAR there is a track in the Poconos. Of course, Harrisburg is the capitol of PA.

If you happen to be of Welsh decent there is a town called Delta which is very near York, which is where many early Welsh immigrants settled. In Wales they were miners and in the Delta,PA-Cardiff,MD a sister town, there was an abundance of slate and green marble mining. You have never seen so many ways to use slate, i.e. roofs, slate sidewalks, stacked slate walls around the perimeter of yards, slate sinks, countertops, etc. Today Delta is primarily a bedroom town serving the Baltimore Beltway area. However, there are still many Welsh decendents in the area.

In the Welsh tradition, the first born son takes the sir name as a first name, i.e. My last name is Roberts, and my Dad was the first born and thus was Robert Roberts. It is fun to go through the cemetary at the Church in Slateville, (I told you slate had many uses) and look at some of the gravestones, where there are numerous Robert Roberts, William Williams, Hughes Hughes, etc.

The Welsh language is a gutteral language and very difficult to speak. There is a heavy usage of "wyn" in names,i.e. My Dad's aunt was Bloodwyn and his younger brother was Selwyn.

What ever you elect to do PA is a fun state for tourist from one end to the other. Have fun and be safe, Ken Roberts....

Thanks for the suggestions. We will incorporate all these things into our trip. We are just going to poke around throughout the state letting the winds blow us in one direction or another.

I live in Johnstown, PA. It is known as the flood city haveing 3 floods. One in 1889, 1936 and 1977. Was here for the 1977 flood. We also have the steepest vehicular incline plane in the world. Maybe you could google Johnstown and see a few of these things and then decide if you want to visit if your travels bring you close. John H...

And if you just want to get away from it all, the Allegheny National Forest in the northwest portion of the state is a great place to unwind. Kinzua Dam and the Allegheny resevoir and river are great places to spend some time.

If you hit Falling Waters as suggested don't forget Frank Lloyd Wrights other home with in about 3 miles the "Kentuck Nob" though not as stunning or famous you can easily see them both. By the way wear a comfortable pair of shoes the hike out of Falling Waters sure isn't as easy as going in. The whole Laurel Highlands area is great.

Come to Tioga County. Wellsboro, PA is where the grand Canyon of the East is( as per someones list above) We live here and it is a quaint little town of about 4,000 with Gaslamp lined streets and one of a kind shops. You can check us out on The Wellsboro Area Chamber of Commerce : Home. Local campground is IVES RUN Campground Details - Ives Run (PA), PA - ReserveAmerica - [nrso]

it's throught the Army Corp of engineers. We camp there a lot, very clean nice lake and about 10 miles outside of wellsboro.

Our area is known for outdoor activities. We have the PINE CREEK which is the best high quality trout fishing stream in PA. Beautiful. Anyway, check us out it's worth the trip.

Being from the area, I would second the visit to Fallingwater. The area also has great whitewater rafting at Ohiopyle State Park, which is very close to Fallingwater. My family also really enjoys Erie, PA. and Presque Isle park. There are several nice campgrounds near Gettysburg, Drummer Boy and Round Top campgrounds have both treated us well. Lancaster is another must see.

All places above look good. I would also suggest Thornhurst for the 4th. They have an awesome "Redneck" parade.
